starting a small business ...for dummies!

Anonymous
I have an online seller account which I used to use sparingly to get rid of some things. Now all of a sudden I'm getting a lot of sales, and I think I need to turn it into a legal tax-paying venture... but how do I start?!?! I am such an amateur. Could someone just point me in the right direction? What is the easiest (*easiest!*) way to do this?

Are you kidding?

1. Get a business license.
2. Determine whether or not you need to incorporate/llc
3. DO it or DON'T
4. Get Quickbooks or Xero for accounting
5. File and pay taxes accordingly

OP, SBA should be able to point you in the right direction. I've heard very positive reviews of their programs, and I've been impressed with the SBA employees I've worked with. I understand you're asking for "easiest" but I hope that by "easiest" you don't mean "cutting corners" or "sketchy accounting."

If you go to an SBA center, someone will walk you through all phases of your business from startup onward. U.S. Small Business Association: http://www.sba.gov

Just use an online company.

I think I used registered agent solutions.

That might have been the name...now they actually do the paperwork you have to submit every year or two years.

It really is not as easy as all these people are saying. i have done it a few times now. SBA is not helpful.

You don't need a registered agent if you live in the state you are incorporating in...I just got one anyway just in case I moved.

Here is another one I googled.

https://www.incorporate.com/

I was trying to do it again in DC a few weeks ago and none of their links were working. I sent them screen shots and they wrote me back 3 weeks later saying their website was working. Whatever.

(1) register your llc. In va, it's a one-page form, super easy.

(2) get an ein from irs.gov.

(3) get a separate bank account for the llc.

(4) use waveapps.com for free accounting.

(5) profit.

I would hire a lawyer. I am a corp lawyer and there is a lot of wrong advice in this thread. Call the state bar where you live and ask for recommendations for small biz lawyers.

Do not expose yourself as a person with individual dreams. It's dangerous until after November .

Ridiculous waste of money to hire a lawyer to form a one-person llc with passthrough taxes.

(Assuming no employees, that is.)

I rarely call things stupid but this is one of those times. This is incredibly stupid and what a horrible attorney you must be.

I came from a poor background and built two very successful businesses. Don't hire a lawyer to do this unless you are making a TON of money. Don't incorporate until you need to and don't hire an attorney to do something so simple an adult chimpanzee can do

OP, I would not bother doing ANY of this until revenue sxceeds around $8000 or so.
