Anyone making of 6-figure salary (combined or not) receiving financial aid?

I'm in the process of applying to alot of private schools, & am embarrassed about putting in a request for financial aid. Our household combined is a little of $200k, but with today's economy, the price tag on the private schools, plus our combined debt, we really could use the financial aid. We can still make the payments without it, but will definitely be a struggle.

Is anyone else in this situation? I'm just curious if anyone has actually been offered financial aid w/a reported income over 6 figures.

Would you think it is fair if the money you were awarded denied someone who wouldn't otherwise be able to make the payments?

That you are embarrassed about putting in a request for financial aid is because you should be. That's a good thing. It means you're not completely shameless. This request reflects poorly on you, and be advised that it will reflect poorly on your DC, too.

Yes - it is possible that you are eligible for financial aid. There is another extended thread on here if you look forward a few pages about the same issue. There is also a quick and dirty calculator on Sidwell's site that can give you a sense of how much aid you might receive.

Here - this is the previous thread to which I referred:

We make around $200K and we receive a small amount of aid. We could not pay tuition for two children ($60,000) without that money. We live very simply but we have significant eldercare expenses.

Not OP, but in a similar position to what you describe. May I ask about how much you received? Half? Quarter?

Thanks!

About 15%. I think it is a fair amount. It allows us to make tuition without cutting off my mother, but we are certainly not getting a free ride. Everyone has different circumstances.

Poster are you saying that if a family receives financial aid this reflects poorly on the family and DC. I really hope this was not your intention if it were you should be ashamed of yourself. To think you would judge families differently because they are on financial aid especially a child. I feel like you are saying children on financial aid and there families are treated differently.

I really wish the poster would clarify so I can flame her : ) This attitude is so ridiculous People are really acting stupid about financial aid and how it is distributed. If they have such a problem maybe they should consider schools that do not offer aid. Just a thought . . . Then they would be among their own and not have to be around those people (financial aid families).

Why in the world would it be "shameless" to ask for financial aid?? Boy, people are mean on this board!

I read it as the child will likely not be admitted because the parents are asking for aid when perhaps they shouldn't be.

I assumed the pp meant that it would be "shameless" since the OP said "we can still make the payments without it."

That's up to the people distributing the funds. I'm guessing there's someone qualified doing the job making that decision.
