DC United Academy - aa strong academy or not

Read this thread for why DCU is just not a great option. But if it is your only choice, do what you have to do. If your kid was not selected it means a combination of two key things...your son isn't as good as you thought (in their eyes) and/or 2. You didn't understand the politics of DCU and thought selection was merit only. It is sad that this is the only option to play at a MLS academy in our area. What a shame.

PP is Captain Obvious!

Of course some kids won’t get offers. How many were in futures? They can’t have 30+ kids on a team can they? No drama here. It’s just simple math.

I guess there’s no way to know who made this team (or who has gotten an offer so far and accepted since apparently not all offers went out) until next szn so how does this pp even know who made the team. But sure would love to know who this guy is talking about doesn’t deserve to make the team.

Not trying to digress from the offer/selection process for the incoming U15s, but the recent signing of international players to the DC United first team raises familiar questions about the academy’s development and pro pathway. Is there truly no homegrown talent in the pipeline that the DCU Academy has been developing and can promote? Are there no U.S. players ready to make that step?

Like many have said, don't chase the patch. Not getting an offer may be a blessing.

I know this has been debated across hundreds of pages in this thread, but the latest signings feel like further evidence that this issue.

LOL.... because all other MLS senior teams are made of 98.6% academy players

I'm always shocked when Barcelona with their top academy buys Senior players

Have no idea how all those South Americans and Africans get on European men's clubs rosters
It's like bringing international players is normal in professional soccer

No Academy player at DCU will actually play for the first team in a legitimate league game in the next two to three years. Maybe longer. No player that entered DCU after 2020 when it became fully funded and free has played first team.minutes. Any academy player at DCU that played real.minutes for the first team enteref the academy prior to 2020 and were part of a better system at DCU. This lack of recent academy players having any impact on or even being a real part of the first team is indicative of a larger problem and that is DCU doesn't develop players in their academy and has no intention of using the academy to make money.

I saw stats yesterday that except DCU, all other MLS academies have a 100% record producing professionals and 85% of the Men's teams come from their academies

just wondering if there is anyone on here that has seen improvement since new director came? like i get there are issues with academy but if things are improving (and I don't know if they are) even slowly isn't that what is supposed to be happening? I f they are so below other academies, they have a lot of improvement to make, but can anyone who actually knows anything and doesn't have axe to grind comment on this? it's just not all that interesting anymore to hear the same few people saying everything wrong when it seems like it's at least possible things are on the upswing?

It largely depends on what you consider getting better to be? When you're already one of the worst in the MLS, there is only one way to go. DCU is trying to be better but is limited because the owner doesn't fund the academy so it has to compete with no money. Hard. So you see them making money making moves like the RDS, the online school, scaling back investments in infrastructure etc...They have learned how to do more with less over the years and that is progress. But there is no one that knows anything about academy football that will vouch for what DCU is doing.. If they are getting better they are just getting slightly less bad. The fact that we are grasping on to marginal at best momentum in the academy shows you by itself how dire the situation really is...reality is it doesn't matter, all these parents in the DMV flock to DCU because they don't know any better. I have never seen so many parents knowingly sign their kids up for an inferior experience. It shows you the power of perceived elitism..

They specifically asked for someone of inside personal knowledge to respond to their question

Not the biased axe-to-grind individual

Most rich parents in the DMV believe that the perception of elitism and being elite is worth more than the actual development of their kid. For college entrance mainly. Why DCU is allowed to be what it is. They will put their kid in a program that is proven to be bad ust because they think that it gives them an elitist edge. Meanwhile, kids with less privilege, have no real access to the sport at the highest levels and rich parents just use it to get their kid into college.
