Official Ebola update thread

I just called up to make a medical appointment with a specialist at GW. The first question the reception asked was if I'd been in Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone in the last 21 days.

She (I've read it is a woman) probably came here needing help, doesn't have local family or friends but knows we have good doctors so she came here. She doesn't know our laws and and broke the law somehow and is in an Jail. Said another way, I am guess your typical loudoun or fairfax or MOCO or DC inmate has NOT been to W. Africa within the last 21 days.

Didn't she get the memo Duncan died?

Do you mean the last 21 days? Or does the person really, really look for trouble as soon as they're off the plane?

I wouldn't

If it's something that they begin to offer for good cause, YES. Mortality rates of Ebola around 70% - 50% with good supportive medical care - and you want me to wring my hands over possible side effects from a vaccine? If I weren't nursing a three month old, I would have volunteered for the trials.

Because no jail inmate ever lied in order to get a trip to the hospital.

Did they ask if you'd been to Cleveland from Dallas recently?

Hasn't been anywhere close to that in the US thus far. Only one death so far out of eight confirmed cases.

yes, the 70 percent mortality rate is with third world care. Even Nigeria did significantly better than that with 20 cases and 8 deaths. Survival rate has been good in US and western Europe, probably partially due to quick diagnosis and treatment though.

Your sample size is tiny and how far along are all those cases? I'd still far, far rather get a vaccine than get Ebola, even if my chance of dying were "only" 10-20%. Days or weeks in the hospital? No thank you.

That's good but she also needs to ask "Have you had contact with anyone visiting from the effected countries?" Lots of visitors from those countries were downtown last week right near the GW hospital.

Why is it the usa has more ebola than Europe and non ebola African countries? What are we doing wrong.

I think you meant to say "within the last 21 days". It would seem impossible unlikely for someone to come from W. African, commit a crime and end up in jail all in under 24 hours.

Our constant USA #1 patriotism is coming back to bite us, that's what.

Fwiw, I work for inova and we got an email saying the individual in question did not meet the criteria to be tested and reports of testing/confirmation in the media were false.
