How is Sorority Rush going?

The process would be elevated with a different word choice. Why isn't the word women used? It's always girls. These are adults.

IF there is a choice to make at pref round. Some schools have set up rush to help struggling house so all many girls have to “choose” from on pref night is the struggling house or dropping out.

COB can work out but you miss the thrill and joy of opening your bid with your rush group and celebrating with all the excitement of bid day which is something they’ve all been imagining and looking forward to. And you watch it all happen. And walk back to your dorm with doors decorated with letters and welcome signs etc. And the first day of classes with everyone wearing their colors and letters…it’s outrageously cruel that schools do this for their own benefit.

Or the girls in that situation can join the struggling house and help it turn around.

NPC propaganda. Besides the obvious that this is not what 17 and 18 years olds are looking for when they show up. Those houses often don’t turn around. Not even decades after you graduate.

I’ve seen it done at my school 30 years. The bottom house had about 10 girls who pledged that were not at all like the rest of the sorority. This was a very small school so that was a decent sized group. They were able to turn it around a bit. The chapter is gone now.

I think the cost of 'belonging' is a major barrier to that. During college, my friends and I decided to re-start a club that had become inactive: aside from some admin work and (eventually) maybe $25 a semester in dues, it was not a huge time or financial commitment. Joining a sorority costs thousands of dollars a semester. And it's not really a new student's responsibility to save a struggling sorority.

That being said, the sorority people are referring to at UVA was struggling while I was there 10+ years ago, and somehow still seems to be chugging along.

What is the cost to join?

It is very varied by chapter in school. For my daughter it is $4100 and that includes dues, activities, merchandising se, and meal plan. Another part n the same campus does not have a house or meal plan and is $575.

This is something the “turn around” posters forget about. My kid got a full merit tuition scholarship but would have had to pay about $24,000 over the course of four years for the privilege of attempting to save a house for the university.

Not that poster, but girls at Alabama pay more than that. Makes total sense. Again, not all schools are the same.

At UVA my DD pays $850 each semester. All chapters are slightly different but nothing is anywhere near $4000 unless they live in the house.

I think I saw this movie. A former house bunny with a heart of gold tries to turn around a sorority.

At Arizona, we pay just over $4,000, but then if a girl lives in it is 8500 and that includes rent so that’s a great deal (way less than dorm and meal plan). I’m hoping my daughter lives in for 2 years!
