Does this mean believers in God should do deep research into the Loch Ness monster before declaring that they don't believe in him?

How about Santa Claus and fairies?

DP: people who use analogies like that fall into the first category. You don’t seem to understand what it is you claim not to believe.

DP- what is the difference between Santa Claus and a (generic) god?

DP (not either of the DPs above)

Must.troll.24-7 with offensive “analogies” under the guise of being “helpful.”

Can’t be helpful if you don’t answer the question.

what is the difference between Santa Claus and a (generic) god?

The fact that you even ask such a ridiculous question shows that you have no idea what you’re even questioning. Where would one even begin to start if your premise is it there’s something that the two would have in common?

Many of us see the commonalities.

Fun tradition & rituals.
No one has ever seen them in person.
Belief that they exist.

No. op asked what people who are not atheist think of atheists.

Atheists took it upon themselves to post pages and pages of off topic comments.

Oh right. How dare an atheist show up to explain themselves in a thread ABOUT THEM. Again, you are answering the OP.

You can’t answer op’s question because she asked for answers from non-Atheists.

OP again. Yes. This is true. I respectfully ask that my fellow Atheists see my intent, which is to learn from people of faith what they really think, but may be too polite to say. I don't want to change their minds; just understand a bit better.

I realize you will engage as you see fit, but please know that I'm not seeking to put anyone on the defensive. I'm not defending my own Atheist views. I've explained a bit, but I haven't felt at all defensive so I hope nobody still reading along is detecting something else.

Nobody here cares about atheists, except for atheists. It’s a religion forum and atheists reject religion. Anti-theist ls are hostile to religion and actively oppose religion, especially Christianity. The majority of atheists posting here are are anti-theists and who have no intention of peacefully co-existing with any religious people. Which sucks, because Americans deeply believe in religious freedom.

What did you learn about how non-atheists view atheists, op?

That’s rich given that some Christians are trying to force their religious beliefs on the entire country.

You only seem to care about your own “religious freedom”.

Some are. Most aren’t. The rest of us are trying to vote them out.

Some may be trying to vote them out but not sure about “most”. Seems like many are ambivalent, at best. Maybe they don’t care since they think their religious freedom isn’t being threatened.

Lots of Santa impersonators, but few or no God impersonators, except for his voice
People stop believing in Santa as children, while many continue believing in God throughout their lives
Children ask Santa for gifts only at Christmas, while children and adults pray to God for lots of things, all year long

But I want to know, and just can't understand, is how a person can stop believing in Santa, understand how silly the belief in Santa was to begin with, and yet still believe in God and not see how equally silly that is.

Perhaps because God promises more -- eternal life in heaven
Perhaps because they never thought of it that way - never equated belief in Santa with belief in God.

DP. Oh for the love of God stop hate trolling with the twists of logic and ad hominems. You’re everything people think of when they say they don’t like dealing with atheists.

Tell me you don’t know logic or the meaning of ad hominems without telling me you don’t know logic or the meaning of ad hominems.

^^ non-answer to a completely accurate charge. This is an example of why DCUM's atheists have such a bad rap.

It’s completely INaccurate.

There were no twist of logic or ad hominens. PP should learn the meaning of words before trying to throw them out as insults.

PP had a good point: certain atheists in this forum create an unpleasant vibe in the religion forum and are unnecessarily defensive, patronizing and aggressive. They definitely do give atheists a bad rap.

I agree. Not all atheists here are hate trolling and aggressively defensive and patronizing, and not all gish gallop through threads deflecting and derailing.

But there are two, maybe more, atheists here who hate troll 24/7, basically all the time. They absolutely drown out the thoughtful, respectful atheists. It’s understandable that they color, negatively, the perception of DCUM’s atheists.

Very well said.

I welcome insights from thoughtful respectful atheists. No one has a monopoly on truth.

Can you give some examples what you consider insights from "thoughtful, respectful atheists?" In your opinion, what would be a thoughtful or respectful insight about religion coming from an atheist?

Questions and tone that suggest a genuine desire to understand/ appreciate different beliefs rather than play Gotcha games with them.

AKA share facts

Exhibit A - no buddy your beliefs are not facts they are your opinion.

No, when we discuss facts, there will be a point where PP has no valid response and therefore claims “gotcha games”. This has happened on multiple threads.

OP (I think) asked me what I would I consider to be thoughtful respectful dialogue and I answered honestly.

You hijacked the reply with derogatory nonsense that theists can’t handle facts.

I know many scientists in both my family and friend group who are devoted theists as well. They illuminate different parts of reality and are Not necessarily in conflict.

Carry on spewing your nonsense that theists cower before your superior grasp of reality but you really are deluding yourself.

Children stop believing in Santa because their parents tell them the truth. Children grow up and continue to believe in god because no one told them the truth when they were little. As adults they might start questioning or might not. It’s called indoctrination.

Plus, after kids stop believing in Santa, the gifts keep coming. Once you don't believe in God, the hope of eternal life heaven is also gone and it's futile to pray.
