Religion
The fact that you even ask such a ridiculous question shows that you have no idea what you’re even questioning. Where would one even begin to start if your premise is it there’s something that the two would have in common? |
Many of us see the commonalities. Fun tradition & rituals. No one has ever seen them in person. Belief that they exist. If you are good, you get good stuff. DP. |
Some may be trying to vote them out but not sure about “most”. Seems like many are ambivalent, at best. Maybe they don’t care since they think their religious freedom isn’t being threatened. |
If it is a ridiculous question, it should be easy to answer. |
There are differences too: Lots of Santa impersonators, but few or no God impersonators, except for his voice People stop believing in Santa as children, while many continue believing in God throughout their lives Children ask Santa for gifts only at Christmas, while children and adults pray to God for lots of things, all year long |
More commonalities: Santa and God are both men Both are depicted with long, white beards Some people stop believing in both Santa and God Some people never believe in either Santa or God |
But I want to know, and just can't understand, is how a person can stop believing in Santa, understand how silly the belief in Santa was to begin with, and yet still believe in God and not see how equally silly that is. |
Perhaps because God promises more -- eternal life in heaven Perhaps because they never thought of it that way - never equated belief in Santa with belief in God. |
OP (I think) asked me what I would I consider to be thoughtful respectful dialogue and I answered honestly. You hijacked the reply with derogatory nonsense that theists can’t handle facts. I know many scientists in both my family and friend group who are devoted theists as well. They illuminate different parts of reality and are Not necessarily in conflict. Carry on spewing your nonsense that theists cower before your superior grasp of reality but you really are deluding yourself. |
More differences: God is worshipped, Santa is not. Santa responds only to Christian children; god responds to people of all faiths Santa lives at the North Pole; God lives in Heaven. Adults who don’t believe in God are often seen as stupid/evil/wrong/sad/misinformed by people who do believe in God, while adults who don’t believe in Santa are seen as mature by people who believe in God as well as people who do not believe in god. |
| Children stop believing in Santa because their parents tell them the truth. Children grow up and continue to believe in god because no one told them the truth when they were little. As adults they might start questioning or might not. It’s called indoctrination. |
God responds to people of all faiths? I don’t think that is what Many religions claim. John 14:6. |
Plus, after kids stop believing in Santa, the gifts keep coming. Once you don't believe in God, the hope of eternal life heaven is also gone and it's futile to pray. |
Maybe not, but people of different faiths believe it. |
And we also have atheists/ agnostics in our extended family and friend circle but thankfully they are kind and respectful. |
