The synopsis is that a mid-level guy at a think tank at a local university that receives funding from the Koch brothers also worked on APE, yes? Super compelling stuff. |
It's not a good look when you don't send your kids to your high FARMS high minority neighborhood school. Wonder how that will play in the election. I don't disagree but it is not going to matter. Erin has some kids at an option school too. |
You are splitting hairs; Miranda has 3 kids who were in APS, 2 who are in APS now, and 3 in APS again come this fall and by the time she serves on the board, if she wins. Erin has 3 kids in APS, and will have 3 kids in APS this fall. Angelo has no kids, siblings, relatives, or friends in APS, past, present, or come fall. |
Are we sure they are not the same person? One in middle school. Two others in option schools. |
This is a privilege that most parents do not have. I have a child with severe special needs and I can't afford to pull them out of APS. Even if I could, I'm not sure a private school would take them. Why didn't she keep her kid in public and focus on making APS better for all kids, as you say? This would include mine. And for that matter, I also find it interesting that she didn't keep her kids in Drew but decamped for Montessori. To be fair, it is possible they were in Montessori to begin with, which was co-located at Drew, and then moved to its current location. She is living in Green Valley, and mentions her mom as a graduate of Kenmore and Wakefield... so...doesn't sound like the family was fleeing high FARMS environments and any point in time. |
I don't disagree but it is not going to matter. Erin has some kids at an option school too. Actually, if Erin's kids are at Key, she is a North Arlington mom. Miranda is a South Arlington mom. Both still white though. |
Oh, plenty of us remember how the segment of Key parents led by Erin acted a few years ago and it wasn't good. |

It looks like she's running for office to presumably do that + finding time to organize and attend community forums on kids' mental health crisis + her focus on learning loss. In the meantime, you're wasting time with us on an anonymous forum. Sorry you can't send your kid to private school. Too many parents of SWDs are in the same boat. |

Symone Walker gloats about her child's private school experience. It's not a disqualifier. But Miranda's bringing that child back for middle school, so it's irrelevant. |
With the pandemic mostly behind us (virtual learning happened - but we’ve exited that particular disaster), what tend to be the most heated issues with the school board and how would each candidate vote on those issues? In my mind, the big fights tend to be over boundaries and facilities. Are there any big boundary or facility reviews slated for the next couple of years? Personally, I’d want my neighbor on the board regardless of their politics simply because our interests in boundaries and facilities are most likely to align. I’d want to know the person could make smart decisions otherwise of course. |
I don't think it matters ("the look"); Drew vs. Montessori, since they were at the same site until recently. And the immersion schools each draw along an East-West line, not from a North-South line. But it's true, one lives in Green Valley, South Arlington, one lives in Cherrydale, North Arlington. However, as long as they live in Arlington, that does not matter to me. |
I'm not going to fault any parent who refuses to sacrifice their kid's wellbeing for the sake of principle. Parents whose kids have LDs know better than anyone how APS fails those kids, and ideally they would put that knowledge to use for the greater good.
Granted, the one SB member I know of whose kids did need supports was Nancy Van Doren, and she was a nightmare who thought Coach Murphy was great. But it doesn't have to be that way. |

The only reason I mentioned where they live is that another poster tried to make it a race issue. The only race I see amongst the 3 candidates is white-white. I would have loved to see some of our Black activists on the board, but these are our choices. (Maybe not Symone tho) |

But we don't know why MT pulled her kid? She didn't say it was because of learning disability issues did she? Not that she had to, but you are giving that as an excuse so it's relevant. |
