what "good" college did you attend but would not necessarily recommend to your kids or others?

Also I had heard home cute Ann Arbor was, but it looked pretty dumpy to me.

The campus and the main drag with the restaurant was cute though.

For me the weather is a big deal effing breaker. As is the ridiculous out of-state tuition relative to relatively the same quality schools in state in VA in UVA and W&M.

It is janky. It's only good to the small-minded stuck in the Rust Belt. Is it better than East Lansing, Mich.? Sure. Is it better than West Lafayette, Ind.? Sure. Is it better than Los Angeles (UCLA, USC), Santa Barbara (UCSB), Georgetown, Cambridge, Berkeley (Cal)? Obviously nowhere close.

I love UM but true story here. Wanted to spend my last day in the diag wearing shorts and sandals with a coffee, just people watching. Late April and a freaking ice storm ruined that idea.

Ann Arbor? The campus, Main Street, Barton Hills are all very nice. But the rest of it like Washtenaw Avenue? Just a typical suburb with lots of 1960s type houses. So what? Most students are never in those areas.

That’s the point poster. Alumni love the school. The changeable weather only helps to bring the community even closer. Remember that most of its students come from colder climates. Winter weather is in their blood and they really don’t have to adapt to it.

The east and west coasters who go to U-M would turn it down in a heart beat if they got into another top 25. And as soon as they graduate nearly all of them depart the state of Michigan immediately. Similar phenom at Notre Dame. But at least Notre Dame faithful don't lie and try to make South Bend into something it's not. Most Notre Dame kids don't even want to be in Chicago anymore after graduation.

Yes, I really thing Michigan is prettier than Georgetown.

Ann Arbor is not prettier than Georgetown, DC. You sound ridiculous. Again, "college town" lists are literally for sale. Ann Arbor has crumbling roads, strip malls and a dozen new hideous 10 to 20 story builder-grade apartments surrounding campus. It's an ugly Rust Belt town. Fittingly, all of the post cards from Ann Arbor feature the football stadium. Because that is the shrine you worship, a marvel and the center of attraction in a dreary and grey Rust Belt college town.

Off the top of my head, the best college towns include Cambridge (MA), Boulder, Austin, Athens (GA), Chapel Hill, Santa Barbara, Burlington, Oxford (MS), Georgetown...

Michigan native and I agree. The UofM campus is beautiful, but the city of Ann Arbor is pretty dumpy.

Every morning this month Ann Arbor has been single digit windchill with grey skies and dirty snow on the ground. Rusted out Volvos driving pot-hole filled salted streets. How majestic. But don't believe your eyes or the weather reports, some obscure website we've never read claims Ann Arbor is the best college town in America!

Ha ha. Yup, an old Volvo with a Save the Planet bumper sticker and an ex-hippie driving it. That's Ann Arbor.

….and Berkeley, Madison, and other locations where top public universities are located….

I don't think that poster meant "only in Ann Arbor," but more like "yeah, that's Ann Arbor." And yes, that is def so many Big U towns.

Jeff should try to figure out if all your posts could be converted into an alternative energy source....

Ok already. These posts by a couple of you or one troll are annoying. You’ve hijacked what was an interesting, narrowly focused thread.

I doubt you've ever been to LA, let alone lived there. UCLA and USC are doing just fine. Sasha Obama looks like she's enjoying the sunny weather and palm trees over the 7 degree and depressing Ann Arbor she moved away from.

There's no hijacking or conspiracy. You want the webmaster to delete all of the U-M and Ann Arbor posts because you're so insecure you can't handle that some folks don't think it's the most ideal place to spend age 18 to 22 at? It is a gigantic university, very popular with DMV families, of course it's going to get its fair share of responses in a thread like this.

You’re wrong. I have absolutely nothing to do with that school. I’m frustrated that this discussion was narrowly focused and, while completely subjective, informative. This battle over one university is ridiculous, and you’re hijacking this thread.

I'll take 4 seasons over the ridiculous heat of the deep south in the summer 10 times out of 10.

School is already out by late April. Who were you going to be watching?

That is because South Ben is infinitly worse than Ann Arbor and most comparable Big10 towns save perhaps Champaign-Urbana.

You have your Rust Belt and/or Go Blue! blinders on. Depressing South Bend and depressing Ann Arbor are more alike than they’re not. Of course U-M is 4x as large, which puts a little more lipstick on that pig.

Please. You’re a troll. The same remarks over and over. We get it, you hate the middle of this country.
