Hello. Anyone have any insight/experience with the Amen Clinic? I'm thinking about taking my ADHD son there for brain scans in the hopes that we can figure out the best treatment plan for him, but it is VERY expensive. I want to be sure its worth the time and money before committing to the 3 necessary appointments and non-refundable deposit. Thank you.

I think it is a scam. Sorry.

"Brain scans to figure out the best treament" -- that's totally a scam.

We don't have good enough research about the brain so that you could use some sort of scan to target treatment.

His peers hate him because he's so much more successful than most of them. And he can think for himself, based on his own experience and research. Kudos to him.

In grad school we studied a lot about him and I've always respected his work and his emphasis on diet change and exercise over medicating children.

"Brain scans for targeted treatment" is still junk science. No one knows that much about brain structure and function right now.

Our mental health system is mostly junk science and you know it.

There are a ton of people out there willing to take advantage of parents and there are a ton of desperate parents pay for junk science. We're all engaged in our own, personal single case design with our kids.

There are so many people who are willing to sell so much crap to parents that parents have to become their own consumer advocates. Do your research on what is feasible and what isn't/ There is good evidence for a lot of interventions. Meds are effective for ADHD on a short term basis. Cognitive and behavior therapy is more effective, but takes longer to administer. There is evidence that diet helps some kids. There is evidence that supplements like fish oil help some kids. There is evidence that exercise helps. There is some evidence that video games may help train executive function.

Yeah, amazing how many parents here are fine with long term meds for their young kids.

Amen doesn't reject meds, he just claims that you can determine which med to use based on brain scans. OP, it's BS.

What did you study in grad school that Amen would be a topic of discussion? honestly curious, not a snarky question.

I am curious, too, pp.

How does your doc determine which meds?
