Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I'm out of ideas, guys, and would appreciate any thoughts! I live in Bethesda, and would like to get my baby girl out of the house today. It's really too cold to be outside for very long. I'm intimidated by the Smithsonians, and don't know where to park. I'm sick to death of the mall, which just makes me feel fat anyway as I plod around in my maternity jeans. My baby is 7 weeks--where do we go? My biggest thanks in advance! |
| early movie? if it's been around for a while sometimes you get the theater all to yourself... |
| Thanks!! A movie isn't too loud for baby ears? |
| Don't be intimitated by the Smithsonians! There should be street parking around the mall at this time of day since this isn't a high-tourist time of year. Or what about taking the metro? There's also the Portrait Gallery across from Gallery Place which is nice to walk around. |
| I used to hang out at Barnes and Noble and stroll around downtown bethesda. |

The museums saved me. I had a baby who loved being in the Baby Bjorn and he had pretty good head control. I would go down to Smithsonians museums during non-peak times (weekday early afternoons, for example) and walk around.
He loved anything visual, such as Air and Space and American Indian. But he also loved African Art. The masks on display were something he responded to. Plus that museum and the connected Asian art exhibits are very quiet and not crowded at all. I can usually park on Independence Ave near the Smithsonian castle during weekdays. Bring change for the meters, though. It's amazing what help a field trip or two can be, and if your baby is ready to look around, there is lots of visual excitement at the museums. |
| If either of you is sick, you could try Starbucks. |

I would worry about the volume level at the movies, too.
At that stage, I just did what I had to do. Baby's too young to know the difference. Grocery shopping, bookstore. I got pretty good at trying on shoes while she was in the snugli! |

try playgroups in the local community centers.
over here there are 2 in walking distance and each happens in different days of the week. we have lots of fun there! there are kids in ALL ages! |
| Head to the Botanical Gardens on the Mall. It will help take away those winter blahs! |
| Do any of the theaters still do Reel Moms? In those movies, they keep the volume down lower than usual. |
not necessarily. and if you're the only one you can try asking if they'd turn it down (they used to do this for Reel Moms). |
OMG, I actually laughed out loud!

We take a walk around the strip malls.
There no shortage of them and if it becomes too chilly/windy we just duck into a store and browse (great change of scenery and I can feel like an adult again talking to people too ) .
..just hoping for no "your baby is small" comments |
