Help! Where do I take my infant in this cold weather, so we're not stuck in the house or the mall?

How about Union Station? there are some cool stores and lots of folks for people-watching, and it's probably still decorated for Christmas. You can metro there, or park. (parking isn't cheap, but hey.) Maybe grab lunch while you're there.

National Building Museum (4th and F) sometimes has cool exhibits and it has lots of space for a stroller.

Don't be intimidated by the Smithsonian - I'm planning to take my kid there soon. (she's 11 weeks.)

Kennedy Center for the free Millennium stage events at 6? there's a lot of activity, so it's not a "hush" environment.

Georgetown park mall? parking below is expensive, but there's a lot to see there and it's not a traditional mall.

don't forget the Barnes & Noble in Bethesda - very kid-friendly.

Some of these are mall ideas so not sure if it is what you're looking for but ... Sears or JCP portrait studio, Nordstom cafe for lunch, to visit co-workers and show off that cute baby, National Aquarium in the Dept of Commerce building, to Wendy's for a Frosty.

Hats off to you for being so mobile with baby at 7 weeks! I don't think I made it out alone until baby was 2+ months old. Everytime I would finally manage to get myself showered and dressed it was time to feed the baby again or change the baby or something would seem to happen that slowed the process.

Personally, I would stay home. Your baby is really young to expose to all the nasty winter germs. My family has been sick for the past two weeks. It sucks.

I so think you should go wherever YOU want to go. 7 week olds are so mobile. I drive down to the Smithsonian all the time. Get there just as they're opening at 10 and there is usually plenty of 2 hour street parking. I would love the excuse to visit all the museums and interesting places in this area. Enjoy.

I agree - it's hard to think of things to do. But just meeting up with people can be fun even if it's in a boring mall! If you don't already have some friends in the same boat as you, try going to some of the mom & baby groups like the Sibley one. I met some great people there and it was good to have others who would encourage me to get out and come up with ideas for things to do together. Enjoy this time while baby is mobile.

Also...HOME DEPOT is a hit!

I agree with the poster who said wherever you want to go. Once dc won't stay in a stroller it's park city. Magazine rack at the bookstore.

When my baby was about 3 weeks I started doing lunch out every week with a different friend. I just made sure she wasn't passed around. My baby is now 10 weeks and we're still doing that. It's great to get out and be social. And at this age they're so portable.

Good for you for getting out! I know it's not technically "out" but have you considered going for drives around the district or neighborhood? You don't have to worry about germs during flu season nor parking woes. While headed to the drive-thru Starbucks I noticed my baby was sound asleep so I drove around the area for another 20-30 minutes just sipping my coffee and discovering neighborhoods (we're selling our home this spring and upgrading). I found it to be a nice departure from the house and it got me out of my mommy gear.

Best of luck to you and congrats.

No way! I've lived here two years and never knew that Starbucks was a drive-through...Excellent.

There's one in College Park, too, right off the Beltway at Route 1.

Too bad none of those are near me! I often thought it would be a great business idea, esp. for the a.m. commute. (But then again, I recently invented the dresser -- I thought, wouldn't it be great if i organized all these clothes and put them in one spot where they'd be easy to find each day? EUREKA!!)
