Missing kindergarten for vacation is ok, right?

Anonymous
My son will be starting kindergarten this fall. We have 2 trips (1 week each) planned during the school year that would mean he would miss about 10 school days during the year.

Is this ok? Has anyone done this?

I wouldn't hesitate to pull out our child in preschool but I am hesitating because it is elementary school.

It's fine.

He is just a kindergarten. He has a lot of school days ahead of him (16 years without graduate school). Why worry.

Yes - I had no quilt taking my kids out of elementary school for vacation without the crowds. Looking back, I wish I had done it more often!

He won't be missing anything.

Maybe. You don't yet know how your kid will do with kinder. You may not be able to do this for too many more years, in any event.

I am not sure why you have so many vacations, and am a bit jealous.

I have students who miss a week (or more) during the school year for trips. Not a big deal.

19:38 here. Please don't ask for work in advance.

It's fine as long as you don't ask the teacher to make him work packets.

You're going to do it anyway, so why are you asking us?

Did you not know he would be in school when you made the reservations? Did it come up as a surprise he would be school age? Unless it's a once-in-a-lifetime event that can't be moved (overseas grandparent's 90th birthday, etc), what were you thinking?

But all that being said, it's just kindergarten. Get the vacations during school time out of your system now.

Teacher here. I taught prek and first grade.

No, it is not okay. School is not daycare. Two whole weeks? That is so disruptive to the routine for your child and for the class.

It's amazing to me that the parents on this board complain constantly about their child's teacher not teaching enough--and then think it is perfectly ok to miss school.

What's amazing to me is that so many people are so tightly wound that they don't realize the problem with our culture is that we don't take ENOUGH breaks. I have two kids in fcps and would have had the teachers blessing if I said I was taking them out for vacations.
