| Do you know that the schools get money based on attendance? What kind of trip are you taking? |
| It's fine. They missed 2 weeks this year for snow & cold. |
| I ask - what kind of message are you sending to your kid that it is okay to take a vacation during school? I am constantly shocked by how many kids go to Disney, etc., during the school year. Yeah, it's less expensive, but that doesn't justify it. It's not fair to the student, the teacher and the class. Sure, this is only Kindergarten, and no, Larla probably won't miss much but consider the message you are sending, inadvertently, about school. |

I asked my elementary school principal what she thought about me pulling out DC for a month's vacation (during the school year).
Her words: "..........., it's only Kindergarten" |
I can see how, if you've agreed that kindergarten doesn't matter, you'd be fine missing a month of it. Similarly, I assume you wouldn't care if your child were having a problem in K and the teacher and administration said they weren't going to do anything because "It's only kindergarten." |
| I would talk with a school administrator about this. From what I've been told once you hit 10 days of unexcused absences it is considered truancy. From there in some cases you could have visit from social services or even be hauled into family court? School is legally required. Definitely check into the details with school administration. |
If DC missed learning LMNOP during the month off, I would't mind. I can teach it myself. If DC was having trouble learning LMNOP during a one month period of K and the teacher said it's OK, I would be fine with it. I can teach it myself. Clear now? |
You would have to be withdrawn from the school and re-enroll upon returning. |
| It MAY depend on the age of the child as to whether he is legally required to go. It used to be not required until a child was 7--that may have changed. |
I have no problem sending the message that some -- scratch that, MANY -- things are more important than school, including family time. |
| OP here. I am actually on the boat of not pulling kids out of school once they hit 2nd grade or so. I was thinking it would be ok for kindergarten. |
| Just being nosy: Where are you going? What type of trip? Is this something you cannot do in the summer? |
You can't find family time, you know, when the rest of us do? I get weddings, deaths, etc - things that happen once in a lifetime, but if we are talking about booking a trip to Mexico or Disney, or wherever, because it is cheaper and more convenient for you, maybe we need to rethink priorities. Good lord, if we don't think school is important... what is? |
| It is kindergarten!!!! And it isn't legally required. |
Not clear: why are you sending your child to K if you can do it all yourself? |
