Ratios ratios

So my kid tells me that 2 more kids are joining his class....for a grand total of 37 kids.

But then the principal will tell you that she has a teacher aid in the class that puts the ratio down to 19:1.

I don't give a crap....that's still 37 kids in the class!

This is where we are at. DD has 35..... No aid. Have to have 37. Sucks big time. I am volunteering as much as possible, but I work full time so it's hard. There are 2 other moms that also come in to help. It isn't easy, but we are doin what we can. The ratios are ridic. What can we expect? Especially at the elem level? Wth??? Frustrated by ratios and lack of parent involvement.....moms and dads.

I feel the same way!!! We are looking at a private for next school year. Ratio is 1 to 12......what a difference.

Believe me you don't want tons of parents in there with the teachers. On average, half will be annoying or dim. The teacher aid option is better, at least the students will get consistent instruction. Can parents band together to fund one for the class, even if part time?

Are you at...well, I'll give the initials...Hunt Valley ES? My neighbor's daughter is in a third grade class with that many. Same story. There are that many desks and students, but it doesn't really "count" as that many.

Something is very wrong with this picture. Sounds like poor administration to me. What type of class is this (AAP or Gened). How big are the other classes at that grade? How big are the other classes at the other grades?

I thought there was a state limit of 35.

I wonder how widespread this really is. I think some people also secretly like it because it makes them feel their schools are more coveted.

What? What grade is this?

There is no state limit currently for individual elementaries. Only for school districts as a whole. That is what Barbara Comstock and others were fighting about these past couple of years. FCPS can have title 1 schools with 12 kids in a class and another school with 40 kids in a class and still get off ok with the state. This is why parents especially in McLean and Vienna school areas were fighting for class size reductions.
