FCPS Boundary Review Updates

Given that we are zoned for Freedom Hill and think it is an awful school... PP, thanks for chiming in... Tell us what you know about the 2 schools please?

Vienna is great school.

OMG, from the PDF someone linked above:

Navy Island may prefer Crosspoint given the rest of the neighborhood goes
there

At least get the name of the school right

So many pages. Any idea of whether all these changes will happen at once or if certain schools will be first up and others later? I just need to know when to expect WSHS changes at the earliest. I wish we had specific school threads. Not sure if Jeff would delete those.

I’m trying to figure out how boundary adjustments for attendance islands, split feeders and population with work in the end. For example, if by eliminating an attendance island and split feeder creates over capacity for a MS or HS, then what? A certain portion of those neighborhoods are sent to a different nearby school?

The main thing people are waiting to see is if there are separate analyses around (1) attendance islands, (2) split feeders, and (3) capacity issues, or whether it's iterative, with refinements based on the feedback received on the prior scenarios.

If they are separate analyses, then people won't really know the direction in which they are heading (i.e., what their real priorities are), but if the analysis is iterative it will seem like whatever final recommendation emerges is essentially a fait accompli.

And I think most people still question the need for this entire exercise - the proverbial "is the juice worth the squeeze" at a time of flat enrollments with likely declines on the horizon.

Apparently not iterative. No discussion of shrevewoood becoming a split feeder to Kilmer and Longfellow when it’s currently just Kilmer.

BUT at bottom of slide 15, it had this note: *Although Oak Hill ES is losing 92 students here, it also gains 77 students per the fix of an attendance island at Navy ES
(students were moved from Navy ES to Oak Hill ES)

So it is hard to know.

The map graphics may not be updated with the iterative changes, but the notes for many moves say things like, "*Although Willow Springs is gaining 156 students here, it also loses 196 students per the fix of an attendance island at Willow Springs (students were moved from Willow Springs ES to Eagle View ES and Fairfax Villa ES)."

Seems like the changes are meant to be iterative to me.

My kids are at FH and we absolutely love the school. I have had three kids go through. Last one is in upper ES.

Vienna ES is 5% English Language Learner and 6% FARMS. Freedom Hill is 34% ELL and 45% FARMS. Those two stats have the highest correlation to test scores and outcomes.

The only reason Vienna is higher vs FH is the demographics. There is a good chance when the boundary adjustment happens that they lose the Falls Church neighborhoods because there are 3 other closer schools. The apartment complex is cut in 1/2 and if kids move buildings, they have to move schools. But, if they are truly doing a holistic study, FH could look real different in a couple of years.

Point taken that the 4/25 presentation makes reference to the 4/11 proposals but it's kind of hit or miss. In some instances, they clearly don't address split feeders in the 4/25 presentation that would be created by the 4/11 proposals and would otherwise meet the criteria for attention in the 4/25 presentation (i.e, split feeders that send below 25% of the kids on to a particular MS or HS and where the school itself isn't within the boundaries for that MS or HS).

Anonymous wrote:Rolling Valley split feeder to Saratoga/Key/Lewis as someone on this thread already predicted. They didn’t touch Gunston or Sangster - both schools that cover a very large geographical area and are thus hard to “fix” without some area getting totally screwed on commute time.

They mentioned not touching schools physically located in the area where a smaller percentage of the population lives (Gunston). Gunston is on Mason Neck and the commute to Hayfield was terrible before South County opened. With the expansion of Ft. Belvoir since then, it would be even worse.

I think it's currently Oak Hill - Carson - Westfield. Proposal is Fox Mill - Carson - South Lakes (I assume this. otherwise Fox Mill would be a spilt feeder).

Thoreau is a three-way split feeder to Madison, Marshall, and Oakton and fewer than 25% go to each of Marshall and Oakton. But they apparently didn't touch it because Thoreau sits within an area zoned to Marshall. I can see the logic of not doing anything with respect to the Marshall-zoned area but it's odd they didn't look at the Oakton area given other changes they are proposing to ES/MS split feeders.

BRAC still has to agree on proposals to move forward to Reid for a Fall 2026 start date. For WSHS, I expect we'll see the attendance island cleanup that moves some of the Keene Mill island split between White Oak/LBSS & Cardinal Forest/WSHS, and the Sangster Island moved to Newington Forest ES/South County. RVES split feeder population moved to Saratoga. HVES likely will become a split feeder to address WSHS capacity. Since they are keeping integrity for Student Planning Areas you should see everything along Gambrill moving south relocated to South County MS/HS, and the random neighborhood areas along the parkway zoned for Irving/WSHS.

No discussion of Carson, which sends kids to FOUR different high schools or Crossfield which is literally right next that weird Navy Island they insist on sending to Oak Hill. You can literally see the split feeder boundary for Crossfield in the Oak Hill map. What a waste of money - I can't believe they didn't address Carson. WTF????

I know. They circled had the three way split on the 3/25 slides and didn't do anything about it. Typical FCPS
