We're thinking of moving to Dupont or Logan with our 1 year old for a few years (2-3). Do others on this board live their with kids? Are there playgrounds? What's it like? We're also looking in Upper NW neighborhoods where we'd obviously have more space - but the idea of walkability and vibrancy is really appealing to us.
Have people found the area to be child friendly? |
Yes. It's great here. There are TONS of young families in the hood and many parks.
Not much green space though. Looking forward to the stead park refurb this summer.
Ross ES is a big attraction. Younger grades are all IB with Dupont circle kids.
We used to live in Adams Morgan until our kid was 2. Eventually moved out of the area, but there were plenty of kids, playgrounds, etc. I would imagine that Dupont and Logan would be similar.
We live between Logan and Penn Quarter. My biggest concern is lack of playground. Although the new Kennedy one is nice enough, I was concerned about several of the "characters" lingering around. My other complaint is there happens to be a lot of rough pit bulls with thug owners in the neighborhood. I think Logan proper is much better on the dog front. I'm afraid of the pit bulls myself and I'm a lot bigger than my 18 mo DS.
We live in the West End and love it and are minutes from Rose Park.
Great for toddlers. Most of the kids disappear when they hit elementary school age, though.
Not so in DuPont. Ross is holding, even attracting, families with ES aged kids. Many others are at charters.
Mitchell Park at 23rd and S, Ross School Playground, Stead Park at 17th and P, Westminster Playground between 9th and 10th and S and T, and Garrison Playground at 12th and S are just a few. There are more in Adams Morgan. There are tons of grocery stores, restaurants, and families with kids. The school situation changes daily, so stay tuned.
Ross has about 75 in boundary kids. That's not very many.. |
We live in west dupont with a 2 yr old. P St. beach is a great open green space. Mitchell park and rose park are fairly close. There are a number of other little kids, but honestly if I could afford it I would move to upper NW for the schools. But SWW is coming in so we're keeping an eye on that.
I'd live just a smidgeon north so you can go to Meridian Hill Park.
We moved to the Hill and wished we had stayed in that area!!
Rose Park, Mitchell Park, Stead Park. We visit all three regularly. Live here and love it. We walk to stores, walk for a quick bite to eat, wander through the green market each weekend and feel that we are raising our kids in a little village. We know the neighbors and shopkeepers near our home, we can jump on public transportation and be at museums in minutes, we can pop on our bikes and head into Rock Creek Park in no time.
