people using the R-word

I have a few people in my life who use the R-word on a fairly regular basis, in completely asinine and unnecessary ways ("It was r'dedly busy at work today" "she looked r'ded in that dress")
It really grates on me - it's ignorant and offensive. If you have been in this situation before, is there any gentle way to ask the person to stop (or at least stop around you?). For context, the one person in particular I'd really like to ask is my cousin, who is both my roommate and close friend. She's a nursing student and I know she would never dare say something like that in a professional setting, so it really bothers me that she thinks it's okay to say it around me. We're both early 20's. |

OP, I agree with you- I work in an environment that services people with developmental disabilities and the campaign to stop using the word is taken very seriously...
anywhere else though, even my good friends who I have discussed my feelings and why people with developmental disabilities deserve to have this word taken out of the common vernacular- it just doesn't phase them, they don't realize who they hurt when they say something is "retarded" it is as dumb and offensive to say something is "gay" in a negative but you can't change that many minds who have made a habit of it unfortunately. |

| I work with people with intellectual disabilities and do get offended when people use it - most people know better by now. Same with using "that's so gay". I do know people who still use it and I think they are ignorant. |
