unusual foods or dishes that your kids like

My kids have reached an age at which they are more open minded about trying new foods. I want to capitalize on it and broaden their horizons. Curious to know if your kids have surprised you by liking particular foods or dishes.

I've taken the approach of pretty much cooking what I feel like eating, and my kids surprise me all the time. Usually I make sure there's at least something about the meal they will find somewhat appealing, and some nights things I think will be sure bets are misses, but we've had lots of fun seeing the unexpected things they turn out to like.

In the past couple of weeks, that has included breaded eggplant ("tastes like chicken nuggets!"), coconut shrimp curry, and an Indian chickpea dish. Recently, we took them out to a crab shack and a Peruvian restaurant, both of which were huge hits.

My three year old son loves kale - just raw. I'm healthy eater, but even for me it sounds disgusting!

My 8 year old really likes kale, too. Not raw though! He asks for it in smoothies and liked it when I added it lentil soup.

Last night I tried the Thai green curry sauce from Trader Joes on chicken and rice and my 8 year old liked that, too. My 6 year old is another story though!

Think about creating a passport for them and stamping them when you "visit" a country's cuisine, either at home or in a restaurant. Adds instant topic of conversation too!

That's an awesome idea.

My one kid is pretty adventurous. My other, not so much. Not sure if I should put a stamp for just eating rice.

Whenever DH eats sardines and anchovies, she asks for some. She also likes tofu and most veggies For a five year old, she is not too picky.

The 3 year old loves Brie. He will eat it anytime of day. He also loves sushi.

Same here. My kids LOVE any kind of Thai curry with coconut milk as long as it's not too spicy. They also like sushi, kale - especially if it's crispy. They'll eat the kale as it comes out of the oven, before it even makes it to the dinner table.

You could try rice in different forms. Fried rice, Spanish rice, risotto, jambalaya, paella... it's an international food!

4 and 6 DDs eat pretty much everything and lots of ethnic foods that I cook. The "unusual" foods they will eat: anchovies and sprats, olives, capers and such pickles, beets, loooove kale, mild blue cheese, sautéed beef liver with onions, raw onions, cured meats.

My 9 year old hates all green vegetables, except for edamame.

My 3 year old ate her own entire lobster when we were in New England this summer. She also inhaled steamers.
She likes to eat raw green beans and radishes.
Cucumber salad done in vinagarette is another hit.
Pico de gallo from our neighbor's house is her absolute favorite.
