So where are all the nicer mid-century homes at?

I came from the Chicago area, and have noticed a distinct lack of tidy, well-built mid-century homes in NoVa. Sure, lots of houses built in that time (I've mainly looked in Fairfax City, but also noticed this practically everywhere else in NoVa) but most of them look like crap and have not been maintained, need new roofs, etc. Crummy looking fences, cars on lawns, etc. I won't be buying until I have a bigger DP but it breaks my heart to see a home being treated this way. The ones I've seen are pretty nondescript and without much of the more stylized 50s or 60s character, other than being ranches.

I'm comparing this to the postwar construction in close-in suburbs of Chicago, if anyone is familiar with places like Niles, Skokie, and parts of Glenview. By and large these houses/neighborhoods are still now very tidy, with sidewalks and many people still maintaining mid century style landscaping.
I miss this kind of house and would like to live in one. I like ranches and don't want more than 1200-1400 square feet or so. Where can I find a proper mid-century modern house around here? Are we just a little too far from Frank Lloyd Wright?

Have you looked in Arlington? Lots of older, well-maintained homes there.

Look at homes in Hollin Hills. Mid-century modern with lots of glass, and ramblers. It's west off GW Parkway.

Check out Hollin Hills. There's a house and garden tour in May. http://hollinhills.net/index.php/house-and-garden-tour

Hammond Wood in Silver Spring

There are also more homes like that throughout other sections of Silver Spring, South Four Corners and West of Georgia, North of the Beltway.

Op google "carderock springs" and "mid century homes". You'll be in heaven there. It's in the Bethesda area, near the Potomac

The DC area has many things going for it, but charming mid-century homes ... not so much. We moved here from NY/NJ area and couldn't believe how poor the housing stock is here in most places, especially at these prices!

Sadly it seems that house prices here far exceed the sum of their parts. Whatever the market will bear, I suppose.

We also don't have the large stock of aging homes that have turned large swaths of suburban NYC into slums like Irvington, Union, East Orange and much of the South Shore of LI.
