we're ptentially going to with 2 kids and will just stay on a resort (no need to venture out for nightlife or whatever). do you think (in your opinion) cancun is safe?

Very safe. I was all over the peninsula in January driving with my family and never once felt unsafe.

I have been twice and the Yucatan in general is very safe. Biggest bogie is negotiating all the time share people at the airport. If you have transportation arranged from the airport you are good to go.
