do you think cancun is safe?

We went for Christmas with 2 kids and felt completely safe and barely felt like we were out of the U.S. (Maybe not the best thing really). Everyone speaks English and everyone at the resort was American. We left the resort twice to go out to eat and stayed in the hotel zone.

Very safe in the resort strip area. Biggest dangers are if you get drunk and act foolishly. Most deaths / injuries have been from alcohol and risk taking (i.e. falling off balconies)

We crossed it off our list of places to go. There are just so many other beautiful places why risk going to Mexico at all?

I feel like this is like saying that nobody should go to Orlando because people get shot in Chicago.

The murder rate is higher in many us city vs Mexico.

We are leaving this weekend for a week. I have looked at all the safety alerts from the State Department and have arranged transportation from the airport. I have talked to many friends who have been, and we are looking forward to it. I'll report back, OP, but I expect it will be fine. We are staying in a large U.S.-bsed nicer resort. (DH had many, many points so the hotel is essentially free for us.) It's the first time I have been to Mexico. I just hope they are not having a freak cold snap - so sick of the snow!

Which resort? I am a pp and we were at the JW Marriott for Christmas.

Yes. We were just there with our three kids in February and it's fine. I would recommend setting up transportation from the airport to your resort (either call the resort or whomever you set up your vacation package with). I think the biggest issue in Cancun is people getting drunk and doing stupid stuff. If you're just lying by the pool/beach all day and staying at the resort, you're good to go.

Though I must say, there are some really fun tours that are perfectly safe. We liked Selvatica (zip lining) and Xel-Ha (snorkeling). They pick you up right from your hotel and it's safe.

Very safe. We have been going every year for the last six years.

12 inch suction pipe at pool sucked in child. Another person fell into an elevator shaft that simply had a flimsy piece of plywood leaning against a wall. These are examples of lack of standards in construction along with non-drunk balcony collapses. The elevator shaft incident then had mexican police taking into custody a friend who wasn't even next to the guy when he fell. Friend dies - incompetent trauma work - one spends time in a mexican jail.

Cancun? seriously?

I went there a few years ago, and I could barely even tell I was in Mexico.

Mexico has some real problems with the drug trade -- violence, senseless killings, gangs, etc. But so most American cities. I won't go to Mexico because of the issues with hygiene (safe water, food handling, etc) and substandard hospitals -- but that is because my own health issues put me in a high risk group. Traveling with kids to foreign countries is an amazing learning experience. Go for it!
