IQ of students accepted HGH?

What is the IQ range for students accepted into the MCPS Highy Gifted Centers? (I realize others factors are considered).

There is no IQ test given. I have never had my child tested.

The scores I received (in 3 parts) did not seem to correlate to IQ scores. Individually they were too low and added to gether way too high...

Has anyone received acceptance/rejection letters for 2014_2015 school year? How smart are the accepted kids? 1 year ahead-2 years ahead? What Special skills other than academics do these or your kids exhibit?

We had an IQ test administered for our kid because we were also looking at private schools. She had an IQ of 140. Most of the differences in the kid's performances in the HGC seems to be driven by work ethic, but I don't feel that my daughter is an outlier in either direction in terms of brains. Most of the kids there are very smart.

They are the couple kids in each school that don't just do well...they are in a whole different place.

My son has an IQ of 140 but I will be surprised if he gets in. He excels ant math/logic and from the way he described the test I am not sure he did well on the verbal sections.

I would strongly disagree with this. 140 is statistically so high that of course she will be one of the smartest there, even though the others are very smart.

My guess is that 140 is 99th percentile if not >99th. HCGs take an equivalent of the top 3%. But the different between 97th and 99th percentile is significant, statistically speaking.

It won't make that much of a difference in many ways that are obvious, because work ethic does win out. My DC has an IQ of 146 overall and a verbal IQ well into the 150's and he's not at the top of his MS magnet class in terms of grades, nor was he in the HCG. I think, at this level, it's actually a hindrance to good grades in many ways. Kids don't want to think and work in the ways that the schools often require.

it's really important to be sensitive to the emotional and academic needs of kids with IQs of 140 or greater. It's not a "special snowflake' kind of thing, but they really are different.e

PP here. If MoCo was a representative sample of the US you would be right, but this area is home to some of the smartest folks around. A 140 IQ is at the 99.7th percentile for an average population. If the student population in MoCo skews a half deviation higher in average IQ (not at all improbable), a 140 would put her approximately in the top 1.5% of MoCo. There are some seriously smart kids in MoCo.

How accurate is the IQ score on the WISC-IV? We had out DD take it because we were considering private. It was administered by an educational consultant rather than a psych. Is this a good representation of IQ or do we need a separate test for HGC? Thanks!

They need to take the un-named test MoCo administers to 3rd graders in January. Nothing else is accepted.

You make a good point. However, there's an assumption about Moco and while there are lots of smart kids here, i'm not sure that the assumption is true. It would be really interesting to find out how much it differs.

Our educational consultant told us that my DC's IQ, at 146, was one in every 40,000 kids, based on the U.S. population in general. So that's 4 or 5 in a population the size of MCPS.

So even if MoCo skews a good deal higher, there are still only a handful of kids with an IQ like that. Let's say it's much much higher than the U.S. and there are 20 kids with IQs around that level. There are about 200 kids in HCGs, if I recall correctly. So even in a class of 25, there won't be more than a couple who have an IQ like that. So the PP's child, at 140, isn't right in the middle of the class.

I just think this is interesting from a statistical standpoint. i do think drive and hard work play a huge role and, from what I can see, a really high IQ is not a predictor of academic success or happiness.

The SAT scores for MoCo are more than 1/2 standard deviation greater than the national average. In addition we have a larger percentage of kids taking the SAT and going to college vs other areas. Obviously SAT scores aren't a perfect proxy for IQ (although studies show they correlate closely) , but it is very suggestive that there is a significant difference when compared to the national norm. In addition, MD is the second most educated state in the nation, and MoCo is the most educated county in the state. Just my opinion from looking at the data, but it seems reasonable to me.
