Hairstyles for Different Ages?

Anonymous

What do you guys think of the hairstyles celebrites wear on us regular folk who are 40 and beyond. Is Angelina Jolie's long straight hair only for young women? What about Heather Locklear - is her hair outdated? What about Cindy Crawford's medium length layered cut - is that what is suitable for women in their 40s? What celebrity hairstyle is suitable for a 40 year old?

Good question..I have totally been wondering this myself. I remember when I was younger, most women over 40 had short hair. It was like once they crossed over from 30's to 40's they cut their hair off.

Im curious to know what the rest of the world thinks of this...

I don't think length matters as much, these days, as making sure you get a cut that flatters your face/figure, and keep the type of cut up-to-date.

I'm going on 37 and most of my friends are in the 30-45 range. The majority of us have long hair - shoulder length or longer. If you keep it healthy and don't overstyle or overspray it, it doesn't age you too much, I don't think.

I think short hair is harder for most women to pull off, and a lot of women in our mother's generation probably looked "old" before their time because they defaulted to matronly "suburban mom" haircuts (and mom jeans) once they hit a certain age.

I think personal characteristics (height, weight, face shape, hair type) are much more important for figuring out which hair styles are appropriate. The exception being a few "trendy" styles that are probably less appropriate for anyone looking for a more grown-up look whether they are 25 or 45.

I'm short and have a ton of crazy curly hair, so I don't like it long (makes me look shorter) and it must be heavily layered or I look like a Christmas tree. But if I was taller and had straighter (even wavy) hair, I'd be more likely to wear it long.

This is a topic I have always been interested in. I think the old "rule" was you had to cut your hair above your shoulders when you turned 26. That is obviously ridiculous. In middle America, you still women who get that "matron cut and perm" at a certain age. On the coasts, however, that has totally changed and especially in the bigger metro areas. Now, I don't know anyone in DC or NYC who has short because of their age, and certainly no one under 50, or maybe even 60, with the "matron short perm." I wonder what will happen as we all turn 60 and 70...

I wonder about the Heather Locklear cut too. I love the style and I've had it for about the past 10 years in some length/ variation.

I do worry I need to find a new style and not get trapped in this one, but frankly it's very flattering and easy to maintain. If there was another style that I liked, I'd probably try it, but I can't find any I think would look good on me.

Her style isn't bad -- the extreme blond is outrageous though, on anyone over about 20.

Your cute should fit your face and your color should flatter your coloring. Those are the rules.

I like Gwyneth Paltrow's new hair. Age appropriate but fun and really versatile.

No matron short perm for those under 60, but around here, it has been replaced by the only slightly less matronly severe bob for upper Northwest moms over 40. Even those who wear their hair a little longer than a proper bob too often cut it straight across. It's a look that matches their Dansko clogs.

I prefer the bouffant myself with tons of Aquanet!

So funny others think about this - I am just 10 months away from 40 and have started thinking - need to cut my hair soon! I may change my mind on this now....I hate the thought of looking 40........

I LOVE being in my 40s! It's totally liberating! You'll be fine! 40 is the new 30.
