Do the mayor and chancellor actually understand how dcps kids get to school?

I really thought it was a good move to make metro busfare free during school commutes, but this decision to open school with almost no busfare has me wondering if they are completely out of touch. I will drive my kids to school, but envision them spending the day playing cards or sitting in the auditorium all day as teachers are absent :/

Yeah, I can't understand this either. It is beyond odd.

*bus service, sorry

I"m sure DCPS has more and better data than we have, sitting at home on the couch, on how many students rely on public transportation to get to school.

I do think the Obamas' schedules played a small role in this decision. I think the Fed's decision played a bigger role.

There will be some absences, but overall this was a better call than closing.

I don't say this from an anti-Obama position at all, but it really makes my blood boil, as a little guy, to have a lower priority placed on my child's safety than on the schedule of a VIP. Just ran the garbage out, and I found the shoveled pavement scarily slippery. With the cold temperatures expected tomorrow, there's going to be a lot of ice on the ground.

how many kids will make it from SE to Duke Ellington or CHEC?
DCPS has little or nothing to gain from a photo-op with assorted Obamas...
In any event, it's ridiculous to have school without accessible public transport

I'm a teacher, and guess what? I won't be there. I don't have a car. Neither of the two bus lines I take to work will be running. I will have to take a personal day. I'm not going to ask a colleague to drive into my slippery, unplowed, hilly DC hood to pick me up. Forget it.

That's ok-- lots of room in the dumpster. It just needs to be out of my apartment. If the rats are feeling hearty, well, then they're just going to enjoy their evolutionary edge for a couple of days.

My kid, on the other hand, has a serious health condition. A car accident or even a fall on ice could cause her permanent disability.

Why can't you take a cab

That's $15 cab fare and $15 snow emergency surcharge. Awesome.

Oh wow. We'll stay at home.

I'm not teacher PP, but aside from the expense it may be quite hard to get cabs tomorrow morning.

And I wouldn't necessarily feel comfortable taking one when road conditions are hazardous. Some are poorly maintained, and many drivers make unwise driving decisions.

Main roads tend to have been cleared effectively on mornings after, but my compact car has a hard time on some of Upper NW's residential streets, where a film of ice or even slush often remains on parts of plowed roads. Lots of skidding.

Keep in mind that Feds are 'open' but can take unscheduled telework. Meaning- you don't have to travel in if you can't. That's why schools following Feds is not always smart. Can the kids and teachers telework? Of course not. I knew DCPS would not be closed. It's an election year, we have no real (only imaginary) gains to talk about... So please remember that we take education seriously here in DC! Snow storms and ice be damned!
