How does pupil placing work?

Anonymous
We are currently zoned for an IB school, and I am personally a big fan of the program. We need to move though and given the very low housing stock right now, there is a possibility of moving to an area zoned for an AP high school. I am also a big proponent of finding the right fit for a kid, and mine are too young to tell. So I am looking for some clarity on how pupil placing works - specifically, if I am looking to pupil place from an AP school into an IB school for the IB program, which only starts in 11th grade (though there is pre_IB in 10th), does DC attend base school in 9th (and possibly 10th), but then start attending the IB school in 11th? Conversely, if placing from an IB to an AP school, does the placement start in the year in which DC starts to take AP classes (which could be 9th or 10th or 11th)?

Thanks a lot!

In FCPS it starts in 9th grade, especially important for schools with the IBMY program:

My children go to an AP school and the pupil placed students from the nearby IB school come in 9th grade. If you want your child to go to an IB school and you are in an AP school, the closest IB school to your house, is the school that they can attend - you can't pick and choose which IB school. It works the same if you are going from an IB school to an AP school. It can split the potential transfers from one school. For example, if your child is in the Marshall district, they may go to McLean or Madison, depending on where you live.

Of note - it is the closest mileage wise school, not time travel wise school.

Also note, FCPS will likely redistrict before your kids get to high school. NO matter where you buy, there are no guarantees.

Most people want AP so there tends to be more inventory in IB neighborhoods for the same price point.

My understanding is that schools do not have to take pupil placements if they are full. Also, there is no transportation provided.

OP here, thank you for the responses, very helpful. I have been reading the FCPS policy on pupil placements and quite a few things aren't spelled out clearly.

Redistricting is a possibility always, hence why I am educating myself on pupil placements.

On IB having more inventory - not really. We are zoned for Marshall and there is more inventory in Vienna proper for Madison, but that would require changing the whole pyramid, which I am not willing to do. Our ES is a split feeder and trying to keep the whole pyramid intact is proving to be quite a challenge.

One of my concerns has to do with the fact that pupil placements aneed to be approved every year anew. So suppose we say we are pupil placing for AP German - after that course is done, do we have a reason to pupil place again? Or is it that if DC takes German all 4 years then we are good with the rationale?

Oh the German drama... I feel you pain as a German immersion program parent - when we started German 6 years ago our local high school taught it- and now they don't.... Closest German school is overcrowded.....

If you buy in the town of Vienna you get Madison, which most people prefer to Marshall. If you want Marshall you can find something less expensive in 22180 outside the town or in 22043. You are making this more complicated than it really usually is.

The OP wants Marshall, not Madison. The OP is finding plenty of Madison homes but fewer Marshall homes.

So why is she worrying about AP German courses?
