OK. If it's a hypothetical, but the poster really wants IB, it seems like the clearer hypothetical would have involved IB classes. All she'd need to do is tell the administrators at Madison or Marshall they want IB and comply with the standard Letter of Understanding. http://www.fcps.edu/it/forms/se243.pdf As a practical matter, once they get the initial transfer approved, they are not going to get booted from an IB school back to an AP school unless the kid has serious issues. The culture at Marshall, dating back to when it was seriously under-enrolled, is to keep the kids there enrolled and not look for excuses to send them to another school. |

OP here, I can see how I may have confused matters.
I do prefer IB, we are currently zoned for IB, and I will make an effort to remain so. That said, while _I_ prefer IB, I am not the one who will be going to HS, my kids are. Suppose for one or more of my kids IB doesn't work as well as AP - hence my questions on pupil placement into an AP school. As to the German issue, it is a tad more than a hypothetical. We have ties to the language and I would prefer kids continue with it into HS. As of a couple of years ago, Marshall used to teach German, but apparently no more. The closest AP school to us (currently, and in foreseeable move) is Madison, but Madison doesn't offer German. McLean HS does. So the context for that question was, if we wanted to pupil place to McLean because of German, and approvals are year-to-year, would they not approve after the AP German class is over. Having an understanding over this issue will help figure out what to do with language - I might just forego German in school and have them stick to the more prevalent Spanish or French. I am trying to get enough info to see whether I should open up the home search area wider or not. The responses have been mostly helpful (except for those telling me how most people like Madison better), and I thank you. It seems from the post immediately prior that it may be easier to pupil place into IB Marshall than vice versa, that is useful to know. |

I'm apologizing ahead of time for resurrecting an old thread but the pupil placement information on the Fairfax Co. Public Schools site is unclear.
We are coming from an overseas IB school and my DD has already had three years of Mandarin Chinese plus five years of Russian. Is it possible to pupil place from overseas (we wouldn't be back living in our house until summer 2019) to Marshall High School IB for Chinese OR Langley High School for AP Russian? I am already aware that there is no transport provided and these schools are nearly equidistant from our house. I see that the deadline for pupil placement for new students is April 15? I just can't imagine having to enroll DD in the base high school and wait an entire academic year (she would be entering 10th grade upon our return to the USA) for pupil placement. Unless the schools are closed to transfers which would be a whole new problem to figure out. |
| I suggest contacting Lori Hershey directly -- she is the staff person who handles student transfers. |
