Roe v Wade struck down

Like they still can’t believe it.
And even today after this unbelievable decision, it’s a big shrug.
“I’m surprised that ladies are getting so upset about this. Isn’t it about the economy?”
Dear pundits,
The economy is irrelevant if I’m dead.
Signed,
The ladies

The Republican owners are all either supportive of fascism or are fascists themselves. They do not understand why women expect rights.

My 91 year old immigrant mother (she immigrated to the US in the 1950's and naturalized in the 1960's) has voted Republican all her life through 2016. In 2020, she voted for Biden because of Trump. She says will risk her life in 2024 (she's 91 and despite having gotten all of her Covid tests, she is very wary about Covid exposure) to go and vote against Trump again. It may not matter in Florida, but she will go and do this again.

Activists are getting close to the number of signatures they need for a referendum to legalize abortion in Florida, so she may get to vote for that, too - and that’s a really good way to make her vote matter as well.

We need to tie this vote to the Senate and elect A democrat. With SineManchin gone we could enshrine Roe. But that means Biden needs to be explicit about that.

I would guess that the Democrats will be very explicit about what the end of Roe has meant, as well as what it means that Thomas is hinting toward an end to birth control, and that several elected Republicans are making noise about banning birth control. I would also guess that the conservative corporate media will not cover it nearly to the extent that they should. It’ll be all, “will this be a red wave year? it’s totally gonna be a red wave year, you guys, you heard it here first red wave red wave…”

Did we mention the RedWaveRedWaveRedWaveRedWave?
#RedWave.

The same Red Wave that was supposedly going to wash over the nation in November 2022 and November 2023? I think the same thing is going to happen in 2024. The GOP is going to talk up the red wave which will turn into the #RedEbbTide

Yep, the last widely predicted and proclaimed "red wave" turned out to be a bloodbath for Republican candidates and issues.

Keep it up!

Imagine what it’ll be like after a few deaths are made public.

Imagine when the candidates won’t be able to stop themselves from their plans for nationwide abortion and birth control bans.

Yes, that’s the one. And then when it turned out to be the best midterm election for a first term President in decades, the corporate owned media went silent.

I wonder how many older women - and there are still a few Greatest and Silent Generation women - will pause and remember their friends who didn’t make it for lack of legal abortion and vote accordingly.

I mean hell, some of us have friends who died from birthing during otherwise healthy pregnancies. Any and every pregnancy can turn on a dime to kill or maim the mother. That is why abortion is a right, because every pregnancy has the capacity to be dangerous and the state has no right to force women to go through a process that has potentially devastating consequences for women and their bodies.

And not only have I had a friend die during L&D, I have known several women who nearly died, one who lost her uterus during a difficult birth, one who now has full-blown diabetes a decade after having gestational diabetes (yes, it's correlated), and numerous women with continued bladder issues and weight struggles. And then there's all the women who struggled postpartum with mental health. I know of someone who committed suicide two weeks after giving birth. And a relative of mine experienced post-partum psychosis.

Ask any woman to start naming women who had difficulties in pregnancy, l&d, or the postpartum period and you will get an earful. Carrying a pregnancy to term is something a woman gets to decide if she wants to do, not lawmakers.

Be afraid, forced birthers. Be very afraid.

FL conservative court will find a way to strike it down.
The proposal still faces challenges, including an upcoming ruling by the conservative state Supreme Court over the language of the proposed amendment. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) asked the court to review the language, which she said will confuse and mislead voters. The court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Feb. 7.

There’s a special election in Fl on Jan 16. If the Democrat wins, the GOP will lose their supermajority in the statehouse.

Oh FFS. Everyday is a new horrible but it’s not going to deter us! ChristoFacists think we will tire, or cower. But their digging in only makes us angrier. Please, please, find an org to support and volunteer. Start with the FL special linked above. The Fl Dem party is gonna need out of state help to pass abortion protections with 60%. But we can do it if we all do SOMETHING.

It doesn’t matter if demographics change. In the states with extreme bans the GOP have drown the lines and stacked the courts and don’t have to be accountable. This isn’t something that will change unless we A) understand that we are up against an organized, well funded authoritarian threat and that pro democracy (in this case pro-choice) are largely decentralized, voluntary efforts. There is NOTHING on the left remotely comparable to the Fox/Heritage Foundation/Megachurches/Elon/Steve Bannon/Andrew Tate coalition.

The hatred of women and change is very strong and the ChristoFacists have learned how to use the law and wield power. This isn’t going away on its own.

+1 unfortunately this. I too used to think we were seeing the last gasp of culture wars, patriarchy, some desperate group, etc. I don’t anymore. This authoritarian, right wing, misogynist crap isn’t going away unless we make it go away: voting in all elections, ending gerrymandering, and expanding scotus could help. Biden’s not my first choice, but I’ll be first in line to vote for him this fall.

And for Christ’s sake, speak out against “both sides” garbage. It is meant to drag the Democrats down into the mud with the Republicans. The Republicans will end democracy and women’s rights totally (and that of immigrants and Black people). This is their stated plan.
