My in-laws are doing us a favor by watching DC this week, but I'm so upset because yesterday, I came home from work and asked if she'd pooped and my MIL told me no but they changed "two HUGE pee diapers today". Um. I was gone for NINE hours and they changed her diaper twice. The reason those two diapers were so huge was because it was probably 3-4 different pees!! I noticed she was a little red below her belly button, so I put some Aquaphor and called it to the attention of DH who was like "oh it's probably the diaper rubbing up against her". That's never happened before, so obviously not. It was clearly the beginnings of a diaper rash.

Then today, I came home and they told me she did a huge poop. I said "oh, she feels like she's peed" and went to change her diaper and there was still poop on her! Near her vagina and on her leg, and she was RED with a raging diaper rash. She's never had a diaper rash before, not even from daycare, but we leave her with her grandparents for two days and she's bright red and covered in old poop? What the hell?

It sounds like taking care of your child is more than they are equipped to do.

I would either

1) have a long discussion about diaper changing 101

2) find other care

Honestly the pee is not a problem. It's just not. Do you get up multiple times in the night just to change diapers? Now the poop is legit. They do need to clean that as soon as the baby poops otherwise there could be a urinary tract infection or a bad rash.

Ugh, OP, I would be livid.

What you need to do is drag them both to look very close at DD's diaper rash. Explain about the pain and danger of a urinary tract infection on such a young child. Explain that diapers need to be changed often not only because of the risk of infection but also because otherwise it is harder to clean.

Then, you will insist on walking them through the correct diaper changing procedure.

Then, they cannot escape yet, because they will have to demonstrate changing the diaper, putting whatever diaper cream on, etc - all the gestures in the correct order.

Reiterate that they have to change the diaper every X hours and check it. And tomorrow call them from work every X hours and ask if how the diaper rash is going and whether they have changed her yet.

Of course, you will thank them for taking so much pains with DD.

Uh, recall that these are ILs and not your employees. It looks like they are simply not up for caring for you baby FT for a week.

ugh you have serious control issues. OP, just tell them to change her diaper at least every two hours or so- 4 diaper changes in a 9 hour period sounds reasonable. Tell them to really make sure they clean the poop off of her. Give them a second try with these directives.

They aren't up for taking care of your kid. It is too much for them. Make other arrangements. They get fun playtime and the actual care needs to be left to someone else. Sorry, it sucks when your parents can't really help.

Gross and unsafe. No way should you leave child with them ALL DAY.

You don't need to be livid or over react.

Just talk to them. It sounds like they cleaned her up but missed a few spots. Tell them she has a diaper rash so frequent changes and good cleaning is really important.

Obviously the pee is a big deal if he poor child has developed a diaper rash all of a sudden. She could have very sensitive skin. Would you want pee sitting next to your skin all day?

OP, obviously the cost of this free care is too high for your family to bear. Make a change.

I very much like the idea of mentioning that DD seems to be getting a diaper rash and asking that if three hours have passed without a diaper change, to just go ahead and change her diaper.

Get some Desitin and get through the week.

I imagine you don't have any options to switch midweek, and in the grand scheme of things, well...is it your first time leaving the baby with anyone? It's likely that there would be something that would have upset you no matter what.

I'm not saying this isn't worth getting upset about, but it can be dealt with pretty straightforwardly, and you can think about whether or not it's a good idea to leave the baby with the ILs all day again.

Find someone else to watch her. If someone is doing you a favor and you don't like what they are doing, it is time to find a new person.
