Are green smoothies really that good?

Anonymous
I keep hearing people rave about how delicious they are.

Is it really that good?

If you like green smoothies, what do you usually put inside yours?

Yes, I really like the one I make.

two handfuls of spinach or kale
one banana
one tablespoon of nut butter
one tablespoon of ground flax seeds
one cup of milk (almond or cow)
occasionally, I'll add in strawberries, if I have them.

DW just started making them with the new Vitamix. They're delicious.
The Vitamix came with a smoothie recipe book. I think the one she's making has apple, orange, carrot, kale, and ice, but I'm not sure the proportions.
That's it -- just fruits and veggies, no sweeteners or fillers. The orange makes it sweet. It comes out a little thick, so I cut mine with a little water.

Carrots are good sweeteners

The green doesnt really taste like anything. Its the other stuff that tastes good. Hidden nutrition.

Considering there is an infinite number of ways to make a green smoothie I'm sure there is one for everyone. I enjoy the one I make for myself.

It depends on the taste of the stronger ingredients. I recently picked up some Naked smoothies. Green Machine really tastes like the sweet ingredients, but one of the newer kale ones tasted like kale. Not my favorite to drink.

In each of my smoothies I always put
a higher proportion of the green veggies - the fruit is there to add sweetness. These are the two I make the most and variations on the same theme.

Smoothie 1
spinach and/or kale
mango
pineapple
almond or coconut milk
avocado
peaches (fresh ones in season)

Smoothie 2
spinach and/or kale
avocado
cucumber
kiwi
few blueberries
mango
coconut water

It depends on what I have around, but I like

spinach (or the "power greens" mix they sell at Costco)
unsweetened almond milk
banana

and if I have them, I'll also add

pineapple
apple

I'm not always in the mood for them, but I drink them a few days a week, and find them very refreshing and energizing.

I think they are awful. I tried really hard to like them. The first time I drank one I could only drink a few small sips then I threw up it made my stomach hurt.

I really wish I liked them however, so healthy.

What kind of blender did you use?

I don't like kale in my smoothies because I can taste it (I don't like kale outside of smoothies, either). I always use spinach which I cannot taste at all.

I don't like fruit so I make all-veggie smoothies. I always start with tomatoes and sweet peppers (I buy those bags of little ones that are red, orange, and yellow). These add sweetness.

I add any and all: spinach, kale, broccoli, zucchini, cukes, arugula, cilantro, parsley, sliver of garlic and onion. I like things spicy so I often add a chili pepper too.

I use a Vitamix and add ice or water so that it's not too thick.

I make them every day for DH and me. Love them!

I make them, and I swear they give me more energy/help me feel better. Maybe it's the Vitamin C (since I use pineapple)?

I make one several times a week:

Spinach
Banana
Frozen Mango
Frozen Pineapple
Coconut Milk
Some honey (I know, not healthy.... but whatever, at least I"m still getting spinach!).

I just bought powdered peanut butter (comes with and without chocolate) for the first time so make one with frozen bananas, pb powder, soy milk and spinach. If I have them I have dates.
