Any MV families considering a move to Bancroft to avoid horrendous commute next year?

I know, totally different schools, but I'm curious anyway. Go ahead and tell me, this forum is anonymous!

Powell and Marie-Reed would be other options, for those in Adams-Morgan and Petworth.

Nope. We are in bounds for Bancroft but love the community and philosophy behind MV and are committed to the school. My kid has made a lot of good friends and it would take a lot to give all of that up -- more than an inconvenient commute. We will miss walking to school each morning, but are happy to get a real campus in exchange for the longer commute.

I don't believe in MV's Spanish language and cultural commitment. I want to see the (Hispanic+FARMs) percentage by class after its move to become Bloomingdale's neighborhood school.

I don't understand the pp's point

I think pp is trying to say that MV doesn't care about retaining their Spanish speaking population, & that if they did care they wouldn't be moving to the new location, which is near a heavily gentrifying neighborhood that is not particularly convenient to heavily Spanish speaking areas.

But, of course, it's not like there are a ton of locations to choose from out there.

+1. Charters take what's available that they can afford.

+1. MV spends a great deal of time, thought, and energy on retaining and attracting Latino families. If you have viable suggestions, please post. The real estate offered was already located, however, so that can't be changed.

Although I don't agree with PP (the negative one) I do think that the fact that so many families who put MV at the top of their list appear to want a sanitized immersion experience free of ELL students makes it appear that MV isn't wholly oriented toward the Latino population (obviously this is out of their control).

The new campus (JF Cook) is not in Bloomingdale.

How many blocks from Big Bear? 2?

About 45% of the current MV student population is Hispanic, and 27% arrive speaking little English. For a school that can't legally offer a preference for Spanish-language speakers that's pretty good, although it really helps to have half of the kids Spanish-dominant like at Oyster. We don't speak Spanish in our household, but my child is paired as reading partners with a child that doesn't speak English at home. They are helping each other learn, which is quite special to see. I know the school is committed to this kind of balance and is working on a providing shuttle buses to help all of the families that live near the current location next year.

Where would MV relocate? Most of the available DCPS buildings are pretty much in NE & SE at this point. Going commercial is a budget buster.

They are moving to the JF Cook building in NoMa

That just sounds awesome. Not a MV, we ended up at another charter we love, but so good to see other positives stories.
