My child tells me that in a previous year when we had too many snow days, Montco held school on Presidents' Day to make up for it, and he's sure that will happen this year. But I haven't heard anything about that.
Are they having school on Presidents' Day? (I guess they couldn't refuse to excuse the absences of people who already planned get-aways for that weekend, if that's the case) |
It's a holiday, school is closed. Montgomery county will add on days in the summer, as they have always done in previous years. |
MCPS would never announce such a schedule change so close to the holiday they would be cancelling.

MCPS has the contingency calendar on its website.
School Contingency Calendar, 2013-2014 If the school year should be disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed, the school year will be extended. IF SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED... THE SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE EXTENDED BY... 5 days one day to June 13, 2014 6 days two days to June 13 and 16, 2014 7 days three days to June 13, 16, and 17, 2014 8 days four days to June 13, 16, 17, and 18, 2014 9 days five days to June 13, 16, 17, 18, and 19, 2014 |
Five day weekend coming up followed by a waiver to get us out of having to make up the days. |
thank you. I also thought it sounded weird, but he swears they did it a couple years ago, and he usually has a much better memory for such things than I do. |
Your kid is hearing rumors about things that have never happened. MCPS has a snow contingency plan, and it will be implemented if necessary. Other districts have days subtracted from spring break, etc as their snow day plan, but MCPS adds days onto the end of the school year. No school on Presidents' Day (or Memorial Day, and spring break is the same). |
they won't get a waiver. |
How old is your child and what is his/her source?
Fairfax does have this policy in place. It is clearly stated on their website and they have already announced that President's Day and a teacher workday in April are now school days. In Feb. 2010, FFX had to cancel the President's Day as a school-make-up day due to the extreme snow the prior week. |
My private school announced last week that school is in session on Presidents Day as a snow make up. |
MoCo has NEVER gone longe, always gotten a waiver... |
Most other counties do this but not MOCO. |
Not according to some poster who said 10-15+ years ago, they extended the school year. My oldest is in 4th grade, so my only experience with running over the allotted emergency closing days was the '09-'10 school year. That year, the official reason for the waiver request was allegedly due to budget reasons. |
I've been a MoCo teacher for 18 years. Yes they extended the school DAY in spring 1996 but they've never added days to the school year per their contingency plan during my tenure as a teacher. Perhaps they did it back in the 70's or 80's but certainly not since. Look for the waiver. It WILL come. |
That's FCPS. Days may be added in June in MCPS. If they are, it will affect elementary students, not HS. HS students have already taken exams at that point. Therefore, teachers may be required to report for a few days. |
