Dollar Rent-a-Car - Don't do it!

Anonymous
I am a bargain hunter. When we were looking for a car for our recent trip Dollar was by far the best price so we booked it. I so regret it.

The first problem was that although I signed up for the express program when I got to the in-garage kiosk they said because the reservation listed my husband as the driver they couldn't help me unless I paid extra to upgrade the car. The line inside was long and we didn't want to deal with it with a toddler in tow so we sucked it up and paid the stupid upgrade charge.

The second problem really has my blood boiling. We declined the toll coverage and planned to simply pay any possible tolls out of pocket. Well, we wound up on a road that didn't have toll booths and only had two choices: speed pass or pay by plate. Oops. We had no way of knowing this until we were already in a situation where we had no choice. That particular road was on our way to where we were staying. After the first time we figured we already incurred the administrative fee so we might as well just continue using the toll road and pay the tolls when we received the bill.

When we turned in the rental car we mentioned the toll issue. They said we could go set up the account so that we got the toll coverage retroactively. The charge would be about $28 for the $7/day. We calculated that we racked up about $12 in tolls and when we added the $15 administrative fee we decided it wasn't worth it to go stand in line and we would just pay the bill when it came. Imagine my surprise when I got the bill for $117 - $12 in tolls and a $15 administrative fee for EACH time we were charged a toll. Are you freakin kidding me???

I am about to call Dollar but I expect their customer service will be as poor as it was when I wrote to protest the situation with the upgrade. Yes, I signed the stinkin contract. Yes, I agreed to the upgrade. I am just so freakin pissed about all of it.

Both issues sound like your fault. Take some responsibilty.

We just rented from Dollar for a week last month. Smooth transaction, no problems.

OP, both those issues were your fault.

I don't get that. $15 fee per toll. How is this OP's fault? I would be mad too, and why didn't they explain this to her more fully.

Were you in Tamps by any chance? EVERY time I rent a car there, something shady goes on with the rental. EVERY time. That rental car building is filled with toxicity.

Don't you plan your route in advance when you are driving somewhere? I certainly do because GPS isn't always reliable/available.

OP, why are you in such a hurry? This is twice when you declined to stand in line when you could have easily avoided all of these fees.

Your fault, OP. Not Dollar's. If you're really nice and sweet to them and throw yourself at their mercy, maybe they'll waive some of those fees.

I suspect you'll tear into them and get nowhere, however.

This is definitely not a case where the customer is right.

Yelp is your friend op, AND Facebook.

pp again. The 15.00 for EACH toll charge is just ridiculous. It is theft.

Enterprise does not pull this kind of shite at least with the extra charge for the spouse. Not sure about the EZ only toll road since I've not encountered anything like that in my travels.

It sounds like this is your fault. It should be written somewhere what the toll charge is. If it says on $15 admin charge then it should be an easy fix. This while thing is bc you didn't want to stand in line.
