| Any California/Nevada folks out there who can talk about which is their favorite ski resort in the Tahoe area, and why? Looking for a place with gorgeous views from the slopes, lots of intermediate as well as advanced runs and maybe some southern exposure, not necessarily the fanciest resort. |
| Love Alpine Meadows! |
| If it is for this year, there is barely any snow in the sierras. It has barely snowed in Calif this year |
| Alta is getting dumped on as we speak... |
| North Star! |
| It's been a few years for me, but I used to love Heavenly. |
| For a family, we love Squaw Valley. Tons of slopes that are intermediate/beginner |
+1 I also love Squaw. Didn't like the set up of Northstar |
Same - didn't care for Northstar, but enjoyed AM and Squaw. |

We just got back - first time at Heavenly. I loved it because it offered many trails of varying degrees of difficulty (we had several people with different experience). It is a very large resort and I found it pretty expensive but since this was our first time out there, we wanted to ensure a great experience. We drove thru North Star, more compact, seemed more family friendly and higher end - nice little Village. Our lift pass, which we bought ahead of time for a discount, gave us access to Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar. We were too lazy to drive to the others except for our day off when we checked out northstar.
If we do go back, I would explore some of the smaller and cheaper resorts around the lake. I am a beginner skier and don't need the more advanced slopes. Also - if you have a rental car - it is easy enough to try different slopes. The area got hit with some consistent snow recently, so the skiing should be just fine. |

I love several, but for different reasons:
Squaw is my number 1: it offers something for every level of skier, and, lots of it. Plus the trail maps are kinda loose...you get on a blue, and all of a sudden you discover it is black - I actually like that. Massive wide open areas to ski where you can take an almost easy, green line, or, push it, and take a black-like run, within yards of each other. Heavenly is massive. You will most likely never ski the same trail twice. Heavenly has several base areas, so not one gets too crowded in the AM or PM. Have done NorthStar - too small and cramped accomodations. For sheer skiing, try Mt Rose in Nevada - highest base elevation in Tahoe, and just a local destination. All about the skiing, and nothing else. |
| Tahoe just got a lot of snow -- 4-6 feet in some areas but before that they had none. Sugar Bowl often has the most snow and does not get that crowded. Kirkwood somewhat similar too. Heavenly offers varied terrain, very large, and near the South Shore Casinos. Squaw is quite similar and many people prefer that but it is on the other side of the lake, so your choice might depend on where you are staying as it does not make much sense to drive long distances to go to any one of them. Of the ones above, choose the one you are closest to. |
| Lived nearby for many years and Kirkwood was our favorite. Not in Tahoe proper but nearby. Fabulous runs but less crowded than most of the Tahoe resorts. |
| Squaw without a doubt. |
