Plane, potty, and a 3.5 yo

Anonymous
So, I need to take a 6 hr flight with DS who is 3.5 and hates public restrooms. While it is possible to persuade him to use a regular restroom, I imagine quite some problems with using on on the plane (and I think we will need it twice in one ride). Namely, it will take quite some screaming, disciplining, etc.

My question is: is it really really gross if I put up a foldable potty with an insert for him at the bottom of his (window) seat when it's time for him to go, then quickly take out the insert, tie it up and throw it away in the bathroom garbage bin? I will be in the middle seat. My concern is mostly for someone in the aisle seat.

Yes. What if he misses? I have a small boy and I would be totally grossed out by it. Tell him he uses the plane potty and he has to wear a pull-up.

What? He is 3.5 not 2. Maybe you could watch some videos of airplane bathrooms or read some books with him about it.

Why not use that approach but in the restroom?

Why can't u just bring some diapers and take him to the bathroom and put the diaper on him? That's what I did and it was never an issue.

You absolutely cannot do this. Please think again because this is absolutely unacceptable.

OP here: we tried pull ups and he just wouldn't pee in them after he was trained.
It's making him to come inside the bathroom that is the difficult part. And he will prob scream bloody hell while in there
He won't miss s he will be sitting on the potty (forgot to mention that), which will also make him even less visible.

OP, your child CANNOT urinate or defecate in the seating area of a plane unless he is wearing a diaper or it is an accident. Surely you can imagine how unsanitary such a proposition is? You're just going to have to drag him in there.

There is no room in a plane row to do this, and it is not a bathroom. Put him in a pull up and if he won't go into the bathroom he'll either go in it on purpose or by accident. It is not acceptable to use the plane as a toilet.

No x 100000. Please do not curb your child like a dog in the cabin of an airplane filled with other passengers. I get that you're concerned about a scene being made, but this is not an alternative.

Are you assuming he'll only pee? What if he's sitting there on the floor three feet from the person in the aisle seat and two feet away from the people in front and behind him taking a dump?

I am a mother of a boy who has gone through the whole potty training thing. So I understand there are challenges and peculiarities with kids and potties that aren't "normal".

But if I were in the aisle seat while this was going on, I'd be screaming bloody hell on the inside. In fact, I don't even know what I'd say after it was over.

If my husband were in the aisle seat while this was going on, he'd be screaming bloody hell for real.

So to answer your question, it's not only "really, really gross" to do this, it's also socially unacceptable and absolutely not sanitary.

Please tell me this is a troll.

OP here, ok, I get it. No he won't make a dump, but I won't do it anyway. I will do some preparation and pep talk and maybe even bribing and hope for the best.
We don't even have diapers at home, so that's not an option. He will have to go on the toilet.

It sounds like your only options are to
1) drive
2) skip this trip

Honestly, neither having your child use a potty in his airplane seat, nor "screaming bloody hell" is appropriate and your are VERY rude and inconsiderate to consider subjecting your fellow passengers to this.

Or he won't. And he'll either hold it or have an accident. Which as a PP pointed out is socially acceptable. Being a change of clothes just in case.
