University of Virginia Summer Enrichment

Hope it's ok to post this thread on this forum index.

Has anyone sent their DC to this camp? Any feedback? Was he/she too hot without AC? (DC has asthma so I don't know whether to be concerned.)
Thanks in advance!

I realize this is outdated enough to be totally unhelpful, but I went to this program for 4 summers many, many (many) years ago. I loved it.

It's really difficult to get into the classes you want (in 3 years of going, my child never got any of their top 3 choices despite 99th percentile test scores), and yes, it's hotter than hell, but my kid had fun and enjoyed the program.

At SEP kids walk to and from a nearby private school every day for their classes. I think it's about a mile each way. If your dc has exercize-induced asthma and would have a hard time walking a mile in 95+ degree temps, it might not be the best camp choice.

My DD just loves it. They spend most of the day at a nearby air conditioned school. If you have questions, I would just contact them. I've found them very responsive.

Me too. I wonder if we knew eachother. I think I went for 3 or 4 summers. It was my favorite part of the summer.

I seem to have heard elsewhere as well that it's hard for the kids to get their first choices. Do they enjoy the ones they do get? Does 2 weeks seem too long without AC? Do fans help? (DC is used to being in the heat with only fans when she visits Grandma back home and her asthma has not flared up.)

Fans help a little. My dd gets migraines when she gets too hot and she has issues with the long walk back from classes at 3pm when the day is at it's hottest.

And yes, it is difficult to get into the course you want. I'd say anything science based is likely the most difficult to get into. They use a strange kid-ranking system that tends to fill the most interesting classes with the highest ranked kids and everyone else gets what is left over. My dd has had a few courses that she really didn't enjoy. She's a science kid and courses about history, art, and sports are not fun for her.

I did it one summer. All I remember was how it was too hot to sleep at night in the dorm rooms. Also a lot of the other kids were kind of annoying.

Yup,
Ds said that a lot of the kids had a heat rash from sweating so much every night, but they had a lot of fun.

I did this camp too, and really loved it. Great opportunity!

I'm much more sensitive to heat as an adult than I was back then so it didn't bother me. I think we were able to create a cross breeze or something and we all had fans.
