Cat dental cleaning

My vet recommended that my 10 yo cat get a dental cleaning sometime in the next year or so. She's never had one and has bad breath so I'm not surprised that she needs it done. I was a bit floored by the cost- $450! Is this a normal price? Just curious what others have paid.

Yes, that's about normal. Ask if they have Feb discounts. It's National Pet Dental Health month or something like that and my old vet always did specials then.

I refuse to put my cat under just to make the dentist another $450. I've had two friends lose cats to bad anesthesia reactions.

Ugh, have you ever had a toothache? It sounds like the vet is the problem. And better now at 10 than when it's older.

You should do it. The cost is b/c the cat will be under anesthesia.

10 is ideal and you will prob only have to do it once. When my cats had it done, they found chipped teeth and rotted teeth (I have a breed with a crunched face). Cats were much happier, and teeth visible cleaner, after.

We trust our vet and so were not worried about a scammer.

anesthesia is much safer now than even 10 yrs. ago, how long ago was it (your friends' losses)?

same or different vets? it's rare in any case though not unheard of.

if needed the dental cleaning is not unimportant, and 10 yrs. old is a good time to do it, cat is far better able to tolerate anesthesia then than when it's a geriatric cat and may need it later. dental issues can lead to infections and abscesses, which can also be dangerous to your cat.

I know this is an ancient thread, but my vet says that my cat needs several extractions and a cleaning. The cat is 6. I trust my vet and I can see the decay on my cat's teeth, but I am shocked at the price. Any recommendations for competent but moderately priced cat dental care?

It doesn't exist. The payment is all in the sedation. There is a place in Richmond that's cheaper but it's...in Richmond.

We just paid a little more than 1k for our senior cat's dental surgery, which included 8 extractions. We did it soon after her annual so that the blood work was still good. Our previous vet never looked at her teeth. We really wish we had known to have her teeth checked and cleaned. It was a rough recovery but I can see she's feeling much better now.
