If the paradigm needs to change, great, but then it has to start with conversations before a player just refuses to follow a rule.

A rule, a rule. OH MY GOD a rule! Who gives a crap what you think the job of the press is. Her well being matters more than the press. This is so stupid and it's clear who the boomers are here.

Without the press and coverage she is NOTHING. As they all would be.

This is really naive. It’s all well and good in theory to “start with a conversation,” but that just isn’t realistic. What would possibly prompt the conversation without an incident to reflect on?

I’m down for following rules that work, but this one is outdated, poorly aligned with the health of the athletes, and caters only to the press. It’s about time something happened that pushed a serious reassessment.

Maybe 20 years ago.... she has Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. I’m a serious tennis fan and I never watch the cable news after match press conferences. I care about the games.

"We have advised Naomi Osaka that should she continue to ignore her media obligations during the tournament, she would be exposing herself to possible further Code of Conduct infringement consequences. As might be expected, repeat violations attract tougher sanctions including default from the tournament (Code of Conduct article III T.) and the trigger of a major offence investigation that could lead to more substantial fines and future Grand Slam suspensions (Code of Conduct article IV A.3.)."

She “chose” to withdraw — after the old guys got together and came up with a plan to threaten her. So, yeah, it was “voluntary “, but in the context of threatening her expulsion not just from the French Open, but from all of the Grand Slam tournaments — something they came up with just for her.

I dunno. She can play a pretty good game of tennis. I realize that the FaceBook and Instagram and Tik Tok aficionados might see things differently, but sometimes the actual skills are with even more than the PR.

DP. The interviews aren’t just about people watching live. It’s about providing clips to be shown on the sports segment of the TV news or ESPN, content for sports journalism, fodder for podcasts, etc. And that in turn draws in more eyeballs for the next match. The interviews provide fuel for the whole enterprise.

Yeah, who needs rules in sports? How outdated!

/s

Not a boomer, but I am someone who believes in a level playin field where the same rules apply to all. When talking to people becomes overwhelming, it probably is time to take a break. Good for her.

How many Nike ads do you remember seeing her in?

This. My teen/young adult kids rarely watch "the press and coverage". Time is changing

No they aren’t. No one cares about random whiny athletes. They care about athletes who they know and have become characters to them.

Well, time will tell us. By the way, she is not a “random whiny athlete”. Don’t be jealous.

She should’ve done a Marshawn Lynch.

I am assuming that those of you who are critical of her actions this week don’t have kids. If my DD took this stance I would be incredibly proud of her.

If you read her posts, she also indicated that she would be available for interviews after the tournament. Why does anyone need more than that?!

I’d tell my daughter to suck it up
