Republicans have always used fantastical reasoning to achieve better outcomes for Americans. Starting with the 80s, they argued that tax cuts for the rich would result in a rising tide that lifted all boats. In the 90s, they argued that the government was spending too much and that cutting the social safety net would lift people out of poverty because they couldn't rely on welfare. In the 2000s, they argued that cutting regulations would unleash productivity and generate prosperity for all. In the 2010s, they argued that foreign folk were stealing our jobs and building a wall and reducing immigration would propel blue collar Americans to prosperity. Are those fanciful lines of "reasoning" really all that different from arguing that horse dewormers will end the pandemic and that mask mandates are a conspiracy to dehumanize and control Americans? |

My father recently died of cancer and my mother requested that the cause of death be mentioned in the obituary because she didn’t want people to think he died of covid after they spent the last year and a half being so cautious, wearing masks when nobody else in their area did, disinfecting everything, not going out to eat, not visiting relatives, getting vaccinated right away. I don’t think people should have to name the cause of death in loved one’ obituaries if they don’t want to, but thinking you should be able to dictate the cause of death on the death certificate is the height of a mindset of arrogance and entitlement. |
