What do Atheists believe?

What do I believe in?

Family. Love. Good relationships. Peace. Joy. Helping others. Friends. Working hard. Enjoying a glass of wine with my husband on a warm summer evening. Playing games with my kids.

What do I not believe in?

Any form of deity.

Sounds like me, except I believe in God.

My only expectation was that perhaps atheists had a similar or defined code of morality or values. Apparently, no.

The lack of humor is the biggest huh? After hanging out with very uptight or judgmental Christians, I can say I will not be so disappointed in my fellow Christians that are sometimes unkind or unwelcoming. Atheists here are Uber rude...except...suspiciously...the last few pages.

Carry on!

Noooo ... because they are not a group of people you have defined by what they believe in.

They are a group of people you have defined by one thing they do not believe in. That doesn't reference what they do believe in, so the latter is not going to be consistent. You see?

We'd probably be friends. You'd never know I was atheist as I don't talk about it.

I'm atheistic with moments of agnosticism. Most of my friends believe in God. I think they are simply smashing, wonderful people, and we have a lot of other things in common. (Just not a belief in God.)

What makes op sad and angry? -op

I haven’t posted on this thread for a long time and just checked it today.

Rawwr! It’s me OP! My claws and fangs a flyin’!

I’d threaten you that your soul was hell bound, but I am still not quite sure if atheists think they have souls?

Maybe some of you do...or don’t.

IDK. Carry on, non-Christian Soldiers!

PS- I totally expected atheists to have a sense of humor. Apparently, that is my biggest mis-conception.

I'm sorry, OP, that atheists aren't what you expect. I'm one of the posters who has been referred to as a thoughtful atheist multiple times in this forum. I am being genuine when I say I wish you well and that I wish you peace.

Same here. Then I got angry at being compared to unthoughtful people in a thread I haven't even read and went on the attack

I apologize for that. But, I really do think there is no answer that will be suitable. I said earlier that maybe this is what OP was taught to believe. I don't think an atheist is going to be able to say anything suitable.

Again.... OP I really do wish you well.

I'm determined to be finished going in circles within you though. It's too frustrating, and I don't like how respond.

I think it’s much ado about nothing, really.

Every atheist here has the same values as most Americans have.

But no belief in a God.

I truly thought there was some kind of common ground shared by atheists other than disbelief in God.

Or an anthem. Or leaders. Or a code. Or a symbol of atheism atheists wear and can identify each other.

Now I know you're funning!

You realize Buddhists are atheists, right? That's a highly evolved and complex moral system to ascribe to, right there. There are a LOT of different kinds of atheists. Some believe in something other than god, so even believe in non-god religions, and some don't have a formal stucture for their morality, whatever it may be.

But they don't kick you out because you're not wearing the lapel pin right side up.

Buddhism is more accurately called nontheistic. My sister is one.

Are you?

I would not term myself a Buddhist on this board.

No, seriously. Like a lot of people here ask questions about Mormons. Or Jewish traditions or worship.

It’s pretty revealing that most hey why does a religion do X is usually met with a kind explanation, while asking the same of atheists results in a long thread full of accusations and smears against the op.

I agree with this. I would add that I hope that I leave this world a better place than when I entered, and that each day I treat every person with dignity, respect and thoughtfulness.

One explanation that I think is sometimes helpful to religious people (and apologies if someone has already made this point) us that atheists and followers of most religions share a great deal of common ground --- we have the lack of belief in thousands of gods (e.g. Zeus, Thor, Ba'al, Gaia, Pan, Shiva, Krishna) in common. The only difference between atheists and most US religious people is that we have one more god on the list of those we don't believe in.

As a believer I have no problem with atheists. I just have a problem when atheists say things like there’s no God. How about I don’t believe in any God or gods, but acknowledge others do and be respectful of that?
