How important is TJ for college?

I'd consider CMU CS grad over a lot of bigger name schools for hiring. Same I might add for an RPI EE.

TJ to get you into a better college only works for the top TJ students. And that is because anyone with a better than 4.4 GPA at TJ are really special. To put it another way, my DD is doing really well at her base...4.3 GPA through the junior year. She would be at best a middle of the pack student at TJ. (I base that because her BFF, who helps DD in some classes is middle of the pack at TJ).

My DD will not get into an elite school. She is hoping for William and Mary. If she went to TJ, that probably would not be an option.

Even middle-of-the-pack TJ students have excellent college admissions results. Typically, about 80% of the William and Mary applicants from TJ get in and UVA admits almost half of the TJ class each year. TJ students also do very well with admission to some of the country's best engineering programs, often with significant merit aid.

If studying CS is your main goal, you can't go wrong with CMU even over MIT, Stanford and Berkeley. CMU CS is consistently ranked the best.

Clearly Stanford and MIT are more prestigious than CMU. If you have the stats to get in to CMU CS, you have a good shot at MIT, and a shoe in for Berkeley. Stanford probably requires something extra.

Boys have an easier time getting into WM than girls, but a 4.0W with a 1500 SAT (which most kids have easily) will get you in. And PP is right, WM takes 80-85% of TJ applicants each year.

I had a chance run in with the dean who reviews TJ apps, and he basically said they take TJ kids unless there is a a red flag in the application. UVA is a heavier lift. But most kids also get into VT.

Any data to back up your statement? Didn't think so.

DP. I have seen a blog post by a former UVA dean saying that that UVA compiles this data by HS, and TJ grads have the highest average GPA, year in and year out, of any US HS, public or private, that has 10 or more alums enrolled as undergrads at a given time. That’s particularly impressive because StJ students head into the “harder majors” (engineering, math, CS, physical science, pre-med, etc).
