Average Americans may have other things to care about beyond the Middle East, yes.

But most Americans now have an unfavorable opinion of Israel. In the last 3 years alone, opinions have tanked considerably. Go read the most recent Pew polling.

and while the average American voter has an outsize influence on the world while s/he is the worlds most avid consumer- no-one will give 2 craps about the USA if they aren't allowed to sell us their products. the economic power of the American consumer secures our veto rights at the UN, once we aren't the number 1 consumers of the world, no-one will give us a pass on anything. gold has jumped 40% in value b/c people are trying to diversify away from the $.
