Seems this is why OPs panties are in a twist. If I was admitted to GU, I would go in a heartbeat, no matter the cost.

unless you got into a top 20 school

I got into UChicago and turned it down for Georgetown.

1990s were a very long time ago. U of C had something like a 50% acceptance rate back then.

U of C is still the same school and the acceptance rate was more like 70% for most of the 90s. That is the "top" school I can't believe so many DC elites drink the kool-aid on for undergrad. I guess they don't want to sweat out regular decision elsewhere but so many private school kids here apply to Chicago ED2.

DCUM hates on Georgetown a lot. It makes sense that not all local kids want to be too close to home but plenty dream of coming to DC to go to college, interning on the Hill, and then following in Clinton's footsteps and becoming POTUS, right?

I went to Georgetown SFS for undergrad and UChicago for a PhD, so perhaps I’m qualified to address this.

Each school is extraordinary at achieving its educational mission. For Georgetown, it’s essentially pre-professional programs focused on international politics, pre-law, business, etc. For UChicago it’s extremely intense, intellectual academic inquiry.

Both are amazing, but they are very different.

How long ago were you at UChicago? I've heard that the intense, intellectual atmosphere hasn't been there for undergrads for the last ~10 years and it is more like Georgetown in the business, tech, pre-professional sense you described. That "where fun goes to die" intensity was there in the 90s and early 2000s and more than a few alums were sad to see it go.

I'd take the Georgetown area over the UChicago area for sure, though the gap has narrowed. Georgetown's location is unique. I can't think of another really good school I'd prefer location wise other than Stanford.

UChicago is still the grind-iest undergrad experience. It's no joke. ED only if you're ready for that experience.

I wouldn’t blame the school for your kid’s shortcomings.

seriously? sorry but if your kid can't do anything with a top 5 lac diploma, that's on them.

No, it’s precisely the opposite: if your kid can’t do anything with a top-five LAC diploma, that’s on him

MIT was 40% when I was in HS. It was good then, it's good now.

Seriously. Acceptance rate is nothing but a function of number of applications vs number of available spots. No more, no less. It’s about the popularity of an institution, not its quality.

Georgetown has "big names", because retired government officials or politicians who lost the election can easily visit. Madeleine Albright taught there, just like Hillary Clinton taught at Columbia. That won't happen at Notre Dame. But I don't think it significantly enhances the education.

Remember, every rich Catholic in Latin America wants to send his kid there. The Muslims go to George Washington, American, or a NYC school. That makes them more selective.

Georgetown really milks their name with short certificate programs and has many study-abroad trips. LinkedIn says they have good undergraduate placement in finance. So, I'm guessing they do a good job at their core undergrad education.

I know a top admin there who says you are incorrect. You may wish to stop googling now.

Yep. If your kid can’t take advantage of a high quality education, that’s their issue.

And if choosing to go to school, in DC, I would most likely choose GW over Georgetown.

That's great because you will have a 49.7% chance at GW instead of a 6% (adjusted for common app/score requirement).

But, talk about campus. GW has none. No borders.

But really convenient for those plentiful internships at the State Department and down on Capital Hill.

OP, you won the contest for ignorance and stupidity, all in one thread!

Congratulations?

Assuming those who are commenting against the OP are all Georgetown boosters, I am appalled at how relentless and desperate these people are to have to keep coming back to this thread. Is this the typical GU alum/parent? Scary.

The only connection that I have to Georgetown is that its law school waitlisted me decades ago. I’ve also made clear that, as a Virginia resident, I’d never send a kid to Georgetown over UVA. So I’m hardly a Georgetown booster.

I still thought the OP’s first post was ridiculous, went well beyond sharing impressions from a campus tour, and fell squarely into the category of sour grapes. Clearly he doesn’t think his kid has the goods to get in, and it’s killing him.

Because no one else will. Good Catholic school that will virtue signal and woke it’s way out relevance over the remainder of the decade.

I always wondered where Bill Clinton got his boundless self-satisfaction. Mystery solved.
