Medium color wood, so I know that's part of the issue - every crumb & dust shows up. BUT, it's genuinely never clean. I sweep, swiffer, I vacuum, I use Bona, and I am at a loss. I know it's possible, as after our bi-weekly cleaning lady comes it's clean and stays clean for a bit, but I just can't replicate it. It's 10am and I've already swept 4 times.
Swiffer seems to be the best bet, but it ends up pushing dirt at the front of where I"m swiffering. THe broom works but leaves behind dust and I always seem to miss corners. I guess if I got out my Dyson & did every corner, it'd be good - but that's a lot to do. I have 3 kids and they leave crumbs around the table after every meal. We do have a no-shoes policy Is there magic broom/tool that would help me? A broom that handles the dust and gets all the crumbs A sound technique? How do you keep your floors clean!? |
First sweep with a dry broom. Then, get a bunch of old towels. Get them fairly damp but not dripping. Wrap them loosely around the bottom of a sponge mop and sweep/mop the floors again. The extra dust left from the dry sweep will be picked up by the wet towels.

How often are you doing this? |
You have to dry sweep before you wet sweep. Also, no food except at the table, and teach your kids to be neat. |
Do you wear shoes in your house? |
Get a steam mop. |
Sunday morning mimosa would be extremely beneficial. At least three. Then your floors will be fine. ![]() |
THanks!
The wet towel idea would help with the dust, but is it safe for wood floors? I do tend to dry sweep then do the Bona & microfiber mop, but it doesnt get everything We only eat at the table, no shoes in the house - that's why i dont understand where the dust comes from!! I wouldnt say they're particularly messy kids, but they are kids. And yes, more drinking and less sweeping would be better for everyone!! |
I'm thinking a new broom would help. Surprisingly limited selection at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond - any recommendations? |
We vacuum the floor (with an extension hose attachment) once per week, and spot sweep with that green spongy broom and have zero dust. It needs to be done every week. And you probably have a dirty HVAC filter - that will make the whole house dusty |
Green Spongy Broom? Tell me more! |
Weekly, but a little dust doesn't both me. You can do it daily if you want. |
Change your air filter more frequently, no shoes in the house no pets would help.
Also a roomba! |
Is your mop head old? You need to replace them after a few months' use.
I'd toss the Bona and get a regular Libman wet mop. Sweep with the broom (replace your broom every couple of years), then wet mop with the Libman. |
I use a cheap cordless vacuum a few days a week on my hard wood floors and it does a decent enough (but not great) job. However, there is no way I am going to use the real vacuum every other day. |
