There's a thinking commentary.

My kids did not get straight Ps. They got some ESs, and they also got some Is.

(Guess what grades I got on my elementary report cards? Trick question! I didn't get a report card in elementary school!)

Well, I have two kids in elementary school: one is solidly average and sometimes struggles and is barely on grade level for reading, and the other is above grade level in math and reading and does very well in all subjects. And both got straight P's. No comments on the report card. Just straight P's and the reading level.

Sorry the PP didn't get a report card in elementary school (seems strange), but I expect more from mcps...especially since we actually had more Pre 2.0. Sigh.

I find them totally useless. The thing that annoyed me most today is that they gave an explanation, in the form of a graph, of the various reading levels for each grade, yet no where, on either kids' report card does it actually say what level my kids are reading at! So frustrating!

The report card is supposed to show this. Either your kid is a dot on the graph, or if your kid is off the graph, the report card tells you the letter.

Um, not a brag. Apparently all the kids get Ps now: the low kids and the above level kids. My point is that the report card is meaningless.

That's the thing- not every child gets all P's. Just like not all kids got straight A's. By saying such a flippant comment, you are bragging about your child. Both of my children are advanced and strong students and neither have gotten straight P's. Talking to many other parents has led me to believe this is true for their children too. This is fine. The report card shows what areas they are not proficient in yet. I do wonder if some schools grade harder than others?

Getting all 'P's isn't really something to brag about. I think OP was complaining about how inane the system is.

I highly doubt that is true. If your kids are 'advanced' and 'strong' students, that means they are 'Proficient'. If they are not getting straight Ps, then there are not 'advanced'. It doesn't mean that they are 'poor' students. Just that they still have work to do to get where MCPS wants them to be.

Op again. Not a brag. How can my kid who is struggling with reading get a P? Same kid barely knows his times table, but he's a P in math.

I agree with OP, but to another poster's point, you get P's based on your kid's grade level. So my third grader is reading above grade level but got P's for that particular expectation. If he was graded at grade level reading, I guess he'd get an ES, but truly don't know. 2.0 is muddy that way.

Wonder if the other countries in the world pussyfoot around giving grades to students!
