FCPS Boundary Review Updates

Lewis appears to be down to just Spanish and Arabic.

But, I do have a question. Why have 30 kids transferred from Westfield to Chantilly?

Chantilly is the assigned location for high school CSS and also used to allow transfers for specific programs such as JROTC and foreign languages not offered at Westfield.

You will be iced out of Chantilly because there's many more kids who are closer to that school than you are. One reason why I didn't buy in Franklin Farms or Franklin Glen, Oak Hill area for that matter. That whole area could easily be transferred to Westfield and it's not even that crazy because as PP said there are surrounding neighborhoods even further away already going to Westfield.

That's because the South Lakes and Herndon PTA's refused them during the 2008 boundary study. And, yes, it was the South Lakes PTA that made the decisions.

It doesn't matter. As far as I'm concerned, if kids living off of Sunrise Valley can attend Westfield, so can PP in Franklin Farms.

Yep. And Centreville can relieve Westfield when the renovation is finished. Virginia Run elementary could shift to Centreville.

Many people want to ignore the possible changes.

And, whether serious or not, all these suggestions do not change anything. You are just moving the chess pieces and it won't make anything better. Shifting neighborhoods for no good reason.
There were reasons that the neighborhoods were assigned where they are--and most of those reasons still exist.

When/if Centreville is expanded, is the time to adjust. Not now. And, likely, Centreville will take kids from Fairfax whose boundary boundary borders the Centreville High property.

The only simple fix to all of this is to eliminate IB. That fixes the so-called "issues" at Lewis and Herndon.

I agree with the bold.

This should be an easy fix for FCPS. Cheaper than a boundary study to add a couple of part time language teachers.

Lovely to see how this School Board pits people against each other offering others up as rezoning candidates, at a time when enrollments are flat and likely will decline in the coming years.

All to advance a hidden equity agenda they are trying to sell as an exercise in efficiency.

It’s a shame we have scum like Karl Frisch and Kyle McDaniel on this School Board when they’ve already demonstrated they are utterly lacking in character. This entire exercise should be shelved.

This is why people without school aged children should lead the study. Too much emotion from parents rather than rational thinking.

I hope that is sarcasm.

That argument sounds familiar. Where have I heard it before? Oh, that’s right, women making choices about things like voting and property ownership and their own reproductive rights. Too much emotion rather than rational thinking.

Certainly then you would agree that I should be able to make decisions about your healthcare once you are on Medicare then.

I know analogies are hard, but think through this one. And if you say no, then I ask, why are you afraid?

DP. That person made complete sense to me. I think you’re letting emotions get in the way of reading comprehension, if you ever possessed that skill.

What issues are at Lewis and Herndon?

DP. The "issues" are (1) under-enrollment relative to capacity; and (2) a perception of "brain drain" to nearby, more affluent schools (i.e., a lot of Lewis kids transfer to Lake Braddock purportedly for AP and a lot of Herndon kids transfer to South Lakes purportedly for IB). Eliminate IB and these transfers aren't possible.

Note that PP put "issues" in quotes because they presumably question whether this is really the problem that some boundary change advocates suggest.

But suddenly these students develop a fondness for a language that Lewis doesn't offer and leave anyway. You would have to shut language transfers down along with making all schools AP.

Maybe but that’s a higher barrier and they could make language offerings more consistent even if not identical.

It really isn't a high barrier. Lake Braddock offers Latin, Japanese, and Korean. South County offers Japanese and Latin. Lewis doesn't offer any of these. So a student just picks one of these and transfers (the accepting schools really don't say no as long as they aren't over capacity).

Offer Latin at Lewis then. It’s a fairly easy language to study. You’re not going to get a lot of transfers from kids willing to study Japanese or Korean for four years.

+2 They can hire language teachers who maybe move between a few schools like the speech therapists do. You can add French and Latin at Lewis or wherever else and cut down on a lot of transfers. That combined with AP instead of IB and I think the enrollment would really increase. You’d still see some transfers to Edison for the vocational programs, but that is inevitable because those programs are a lot harder to offer everywhere since they require more dedicated and specialized classroom space and equipment.

The problem with language course equity has a simple solution. Stop teaching foreign languages altogether and put that money towards teaching English and other useful things.

Honestly, those who are most knowledgeable about the factors relevant to boundary discussions are a mix of current and former parents. The BRAC process is designed to select a group of current parents who may or may not be very knowledgeable and can be led down the desired path by FCPS staff and Thru Consulting. Of course, some are sharp and will challenge them and ask the right questions, but a lot of them seem unlikely to do much more than make sure they aren’t personally affected in what they’d consider a negative way.

That’s not intended as an insult, just a reminder that folks shouldn’t assume that what comes out of the BRAC process reflects the best possible thinking on the topic. People who’ve been largely sidelined should absolutely continue to monitor these proposals and challenge those they believe are ill-advised.
