Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| For the past week or so my 3 1/2 month old has been blowing out his diapers once a day. He has done this once or twice before but it seems like the past week he has done it each day or everyother day. I mean poop up to his shoulders. He is 15 lbs and in size 3 cruisers he has been in them prior to the increase in blow outs so I don't think it is the diapers, I make sure they are tight. Is this normal? He is EBF so his poop is a lovely orange liquid most of the time, does it ever get solid? |
| It doesn't get solid as long as he's on a liquid diet. Solids in a couple months will help. This shall pass eventually. |

Maybe the diaper is too big?
I had to switch between Huggies and Pampers as my child grew. Big tummy? Pampers were better. Thin? Huggies worked better at keeping leaks in. |
| Also, I assume you know the trick of folding down the top of the inside of the back of the diaper, so it creates a little stopper? |
I agree with this. |
I can't imagine that a 15lb baby would be in 4s yet - my 25lb 11-mth old is still in 3s except at night when we use a 4. It almost sounds like the diaper is too big or not tight enough to prevent blow-outs...or you're just one of the lucky moms who gets to do a lot of laundry b/c no diaper fits quite right! Hang in there, it'll get better in a few months.
Also, maybe don't use the cruisers. I think they are really made for babies that crawl/walk so they are more flexible in the waist - seems like you might want one that is less flexible! |
Op here, I did NOT know this little trick but I can imagine it will help with the situation. Thanks for all the thoughts. What diapers other than cruisers could I get? He was in swaddlers but once we ran out of size 2s I went to the box of size 3 cruisers we had in the closet. I didn't think swaddlers went up bigger than 2s. He is quite chunky in the thighs and belly so I don't know if the huggies would be better |
| The swaddlers come in a size 2-3. Kinda an intermediate size I guess. |
| yes, we are using the 2-3, they are for 14-22 pounds. Our DD is 17 pounds and they fit perfectly. We have only found them at Target or online. |
| why not give the next size up a try? Either way, you'll use them eventually. |
You can also find size 2-3 in Baby R Rus. My baby is 15 pounds now and we use Pampers size 2 . It fits quite well for him. |
| Sounds like the diaper is too big. Huggies seemed to be longer on our kid so they protected her better against blowouts |

I tried every diaper out there in every size, and my little one still oozed out until she was on solids 2x a day (about 6 months) - Nothing worked! Sorry!
I bought the disposable changing pads at BRU and put them under her in the carseat, bouncy seat, etc. It helped some, but invest in some good pre-treater! |
| I went through the same thing with my son, who has been in the 90th percentile for height & weight. I tried every diaper & huggies snug & dry worked best. Solids help tremendously, but in the meantime, just make sure you have a large amt. of laundry detergent. |
They have them at BJs, too. |
