What do you think of these grades?

Freshman at Wm & Mary:
2 A's
1 B
2 C's
works out to a 3.1 because of credits/class

Disappointing. A wake up call that your freshman is not working hard enough.

Please zip it. Do you know how many kids I have in my classes who are really just C students? They may bust their butts, but the material is above them a bit. And they come crying to me and trying to manipulate me and work the system because mom and dad can't accept that. Junior isn't a Perfect A.

The grades are fine, esp for a first semester freshman at a challenging college.

I think those grades are a WHOLE lot better than my 1st semester undergrad grades were.

Fortunately, I grew the hell up after freshman year and my grades went up as well. So if that's what you're working with after the first semester, you're doing pretty darned good--especially for a challenging school like WM.

Not bad. Could be better. Pretty normal for a freshman.

I agree with the PP - I feel for your kids if that is your attitude! My goodness - it's the kids 1st semester away at school - transitions are harder on some kids than others!

OP - how did your DC do in high school? Are these grades completely off as compared? I think these grades are okay for a first semester of college given that there is so much transition during this time - new environment, new people, being away from home, the list goes on…however, I would definitely have him/her take a good, hard look at the reasons for the C's - were the classes really too hard or did he/she not try hard enough? If the answer was an admission of not working hard enough I would have some straight talk about expectations, cost of college, etc. However, if the answer opens up some other stuff that they are having difficulty with - roommate trouble, not feeling prepared for the expectations - then I would help them find some solutions. It may mean needing to see the professors more often, the advisor (or whatever system is in place at W&M) or simply limiting social time and spending more time in the library.

You can let you child know that you have expectations for their performance at college while also helping them adjust to the new situation. It's all about how you handle the conversation. Good luck!

Right there with you, and my husband, too. I only got a 3.0 my first semester if you rounded up! Definitely not grades we were used to seeing (both got straight A's in high school). But after that wake-up call, I wound up making Dean's List a few times, as did my husband.

So is it cause for alarm? No, but hopefully your kid will get it figured out on his/her own.

This. The first semester is a time of adjustment for a lot of kids.

I would have been thrilled if my oldest got those grades. Not so happy if my second got those grades. Different kids. It also depends a lot on the class, how hard he worked, etc. If it was a C in biology and he worked like crazy for it then I don't have a problem with it.

What major OP? For someone in pre-med those grades would be pretty normal. Poli Sci? Well...not as much. But, I agree with several other posters that these are pretty normal first semester grades especially for a student who is used to skating pretty easily and doing well without much effort. College takes a lot more effort and study skills. Did your child go to a private or public h.s.? Often, kids aren't adequately prepared for the rigors of college life.

DH graduated with a 3.0. He was the smart but a bit on the lazy side. When he applied for jobs, no one asked for transcripts but wanted affirmation that he held a degree (BS and MS). Some companies want a complete transcript but many do not. Regardless, that piece of paper carries a lot of weight.

OP here. I am happy with them considering it's a challenging school and it's all new being a first semester freshman. DC didn't get C's or many B's in HS. I just wanted other's thoughts. I think I had a 2.1 after my first semester!

I'd be happy.
