Disappointing. A wake up call that your freshman is not working hard enough.
Please zip it. Do you know how many kids I have in my classes who are really just C students? They may bust their butts, but the material is above them a bit. And they come crying to me and trying to manipulate me and work the system because mom and dad can't accept that. Junior isn't a Perfect A. The grades are fine, esp for a first semester freshman at a challenging college.
I agree with the PP - I feel for your kids if that is your attitude! My goodness - it's the kids 1st semester away at school - transitions are harder on some kids than others! OP - how did your DC do in high school? Are these grades completely off as compared? I think these grades are okay for a first semester of college given that there is so much transition during this time - new environment, new people, being away from home, the list goes on…however, I would definitely have him/her take a good, hard look at the reasons for the C's - were the classes really too hard or did he/she not try hard enough? If the answer was an admission of not working hard enough I would have some straight talk about expectations, cost of college, etc. However, if the answer opens up some other stuff that they are having difficulty with - roommate trouble, not feeling prepared for the expectations - then I would help them find some solutions. It may mean needing to see the professors more often, the advisor (or whatever system is in place at W&M) or simply limiting social time and spending more time in the library. You can let you child know that you have expectations for their performance at college while also helping them adjust to the new situation. It's all about how you handle the conversation. Good luck!
