Moving from the Mclean School to Bullis

Anonymous
I am interested in applying to the Mclean school for my son that has ADD. He could benefit from a school that has small class size and individualized instruction in a nurturing environment. I was recently made aware that a lot of the kids at the Mclean are transferring to the Bullis school. My dilemma is whether or not to send him to the Mclean school to help him to strengthen his academic skill, then later transfer him to Bullis for a broader curriculum. Hmmm?.

Lots of kids at Bulllis with ADD

Learning Center in Library will support tutors and more individual attention

Bullis has small class sizes as well

Better social, sports and arts offerings at Bullis

OP. I really want him to go with Bullis, but I am afraid that he may get lost in the system. I don't want him to fall through the cracks. He love the arts of all kinds. I am just scare, because he is being so overwhelmed at his current school. The problem with his current school is that it is too darn demanding and above grade level.

I think it is a good plan for a few reasons.

He will learn certain skills at McLean school that he can't learn in his present school. Alternatively you could hire an academic therapist and keep him where he is but that means going to school all day and then more school (tutoring at night).

Have you spoken to either school. I think this goes a long way, sometime kids are somewhere in between, Lab and McLean being overkill and public not providing any services. Bullis might be that nice inbetween place. I don't see anybody getting "lost" at Bullis

Do you realize how small Bullis is? It is much smaller than I expected. (since the campus is really large)

Also, if he goes to McLean for a little and then transfers there is sort of a feel of accomplishment, like I graduate. Many programs have the kids start in specialized classes and slowly move them to mainstreamed classes with accomodations.

Not sure of your son's age but St. John's, Paul VI and OLGC also have programs for kids with LD's.

The good news is that you have alot of good choices

There are 79 kids in LS, 205 in US and 461 in US.

If he is in LS or MS, not sure how he would get lost in the cracks.

US is large but if he wants the arts, you want to have a good number of kids for music, drama etc.

here is information on the learning support at Bullis. I don't think he would get lost in the system. That is why you are paying the money.

As far as arts, Bulllis is excellent.

Bullis upper school is a weird mix of recruited athletes, full playing international kids living with families (Bullis gives the families $10,000 credit), and then your average local families. I wouldn't feel like it is some fantastic option that pulls you away from McLean.

Interesting. I'm not aware of any kids in my DS' class transferring to Bullis.

Op. I read a few past posts regarding the transfers. I really respect the Mclean school for the work that they do. They services a lot of kids that may have been lost out there in strict traditional school setting.

Couldn't agree more. No way he'd fall through the cracks in LS or MS...and maybe not even US.

Why is the Mclean Schools' enrollment going down?.

There have been a ton of threads about this. Its only enrollment in some lower grades that has declined, my son's grade hasn't at all. The school took a hit during the recession and is slowly coming back. New leadership will absolutely help.

It's a marginal school to begin with.

I know a lot of kids who have moved from McLean to St. Andrew's. St. Andrew's is smaller than Bullis, and seems to accommodate students with mild LDs well. The kids I know experienced a smooth transition. My DS is at SAES in the US, and many of her friends came from McLean. There are 75 in her class. To be fair, I've only heard good things about Bullis, so it's a good idea to take a look at both. Bullis is definitely stronger in the athletics dept.
