| I came home to a card from USPS that they have not one but two certified letters from the IRS for me. Of course I will pick them up and read them, but I am a little freaked out in the meantime... what could it be? Has anyone else gotten 2 letters? I don't owe them any money and we file jointly, usually letters are addressed to both me and DH. Am I being audited? I didn't get a letter from them before. |
| Well, you're not going to get less "freaked out" by speculating on DCUM. Open them for God's sake. Regardless of what it is, it's likely not going to get better with age. |
| You didn't read carefully enough... I missed the mailman, I can't pick them up until tomorrow. |
| I obviously don't know what the letters are, but any time the IRS thinks we have owed money, they have sent separate letters to my spouse and me, even though we file jointly. So you probably have 2 identical letters from the IRS. |
| I think they have to send one to H and one to W. Otherwise, one or the other could claim they did not receive it. |
| Thanks PPs, but they are both addressed to me. Which makes this so bizarre. |
| Update us when you find out, I'm curious! |
| Will do! |

OP -
any recent name change? or did you become self employed? How can you be sure you don't owe the IRS? Just asking, not being snarky. We got hit by a $16K "delinquent" tax bill because our CPA made an error on our returns. You can imagine our shock! |
OP here. No name change, but we did have a nanny last year... though again, this would have gone to both of us. Of course, I cannot be 100% sure, but the one time we did owe them money, the letter came by regular mail, and we paid it on time. Yes, I would be shocked at $16k, too!! |
I got those when we owed money. two letters, one for each spouse, but the letters both come addressed to "John and Mary Doe." It's however you fill our your tax returns. Are you listed first on them?
|
| IRS is terrible. Lke others, they keep sending me erroneous request for more taxes because they either lose or forget to read specific tax return documents. I am not sure if this is a new tactic to collect taxes on those that are too busy to bother refuting a few hundred. |
No my DH is listed first. The more I think about it, the more I could imagine that it has to do with the nanny, because I applied for an EIN. Maybe something went wrong there.

Forgot to add that we also got two letters - one for me and one for DH. Even though the usps card has your name for both, it could very well be that its for each of you. the faster you get to the post office the better off you'll feel. just rip the band aid off....anticipating or wondering is more painful than actually knowing. and whatever it is, it cant be THAT bad. So what if you owe a bit more. happens to a lot of us. the will work with you if its a hardship. did you dip into your retirement last year? or any other non-ordinary occurrence outside of the nanny? how did you classify your nanny? how did you pay her? Did your CPA do your taxes or did you do them yourselves? |
| Either you owe or you're being audited or they are finding you liable for the AMT and are wanting to collect. I hate to say it but whatever it is it isn't good news. |
